Crime is down
I currently work in Seattle for Apple but recently they have asked me to move down to bay area office by September. My parents don't want me to move because they want a son around to take care of them. My mom had a heart transplant a couple years back and is now doing excellent. But she lives in constant fear something will happen. My father loves the his grands kids and will miss them a lot. They are old and stubborn, so flying often to see them is not appealing. My parents offered me one time $1 million plus $10K per month forever if I quit Apple and find a local job in Seattle. Side note, there is no state income tax in Washington. California has much heavier tax. I've been at Apple 10 months, so hard to transfer to new team. I should also add, my parents could easily afford a house in bay area. They have significant wealth. They choose not to move because they are old and stubborn. I should also add that I have already sacrificed my Intel career. When my mom needed surgery, she needed significant homecare and refused to hire help. I ended up filling that gap and had to quit Intel. I was not compensated for that departure in any way. I just lived on my savings for 1 year. So you see, I feel I've already sacrificed my career once. I have two brothers but they are lazy and refuse to come help. Apple TC: 300K Update: I wanted to clarify a few things: 1. My parents have a house east bay already. In fact, my brother and sister in law live in the house and a wing of the house is dedicated to my parents. If they moved down, they wouldn't be alone and it's fully furnished. 2. Even with the house down in the east bay, they refuse to move or commute regularly. They are old, so they don't feel like learning new roads, new stores, find new doctors, etc. They are stuck in their ways. 3. The 1 million likely has some strings attached, it's not likely they will just give me a bag of cash. 7/1/22 Update: I stayed in Seattle because my apple org has office here now. No need to move. I didn't take money, but my older brother moved back to Seattle and took the deal. I didn't feel right taking money since I will get it from inheritance. #faang #apple
Join Facebook Seattle, screw moving after only 10 months
Seattle has a lot of tech companies, you can always try for them. Good luck 👍
Can you transfer to apples seattle office
I've asked and they said no.
Change teams at Apple. There are teams in seattle and there are many who allow permanent remote work. Dont leave your family and life for Apple offices (propaganda and politics). You will regret you choice if you decide to move.
You could also just tell apple you need to stay in Seattle for family reasons and see if they can work something out for you
This is the logical first step before any decisions are made.
I've asked, Apple said I now need to move.
Change companies. Let them keep their $1M.
Can’t believe more people haven’t said this. Being an adult making 300k and taking 1m from your sickly parents is theft.
Sounds like his parents are substantiality wealthy, though. So 1M might be nothing to them.
Take one million joining bonus, stay in Seattle for a year and then return back to back to apple in bay area after a year
Thank the parents. Don’t take the money. Stay in Seattle. There are plenty of opportunities in Seattle and the move for the Apple just not worth it. Out of curiosity. When Apple made the offer, did they make you aware the position is for Bay Area and not for Seattle?
First world problems. The 120k and 1M bonus will only last so much in the upcoming inflation wave. I say.. take the job .. and spend your apple money to travel up & down every weekend and take care of your family. If it's a money decision.. then it's simple. You are going to get the $ anyway. Now or later. So it's mostly a personal decision @ why do you really need to be in Seattle VS What are your career goals. Does making this move put your long-term plans in jeopardy ? Have you already exhausted the option of moving to a new team within Apple Seattle ? You can make a temporary move to Bay area until you make this internal switch. So instead of this poll. Ask yourself these questions.
I actually would try to go back to Intel :) Apple won't letr stay in Seattle, I've asked.
If your parent can offer you 1M sign on and 120k for just being around, why work (joking)? There are other companies in Seattle - Apple don’t even have its HQ there. You should be able to find another job easily.
I can’t believe you even have to ask. Take the 1M. There’s tons of jobs in Seattle
I can't believe there are people who answered differently to poll and suggested staying with job and moving
Not only because if money, but because of your parents you should stay in Seattle. Even if they had not offered money, you should've at least tried to find a job in a Seattle. Also if it was SF vs some town then you could've asked this question. But Seattle is nice. You can balance work and family both. Don't compromise relations because of jobs. Jobs are temporary. Parents, partner and family is for life.
