Joined 2 years back L5 @ 370k. Stock appreciated + stacked refresher, TC is now ~650k (13 YOE, Bay area). Quitting because feel down-leveled. Scope of work has not much impact. No promotion in sight in the next 2 years. Team is good, but lot of work. Don't want to change teams. Got offers from Microsoft, Uber, Coinbase, Twitter, Meta. None are able to beat stock appreciated TC. Now feel wasn't worth the effort other than getting to the right level. Should I stay another 2 years until cliff? If not, which company has the most TC growth opportunity. Also, where do people go after Google? EDIT: Sorry for not being clearer: all are staff-level offers. Some are ready to match but not go beyond. Also, primary reason to leave is self-growth (I am okay with TC remaining same). Want to get some feedback if I should push harder, i.e. is higher TC possible (did very well at interviews).

Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
Stay till cliff for sure no point wasting all that money if the other offers aren’t as high
what does cliff mean?
@oracle my understanding is cliff = RSUs fully vesting and your TC falls off a cliff. Either need promotion or really good refreshers to keep away from cliff
What are you looking for in the new job. If money then you have no other better place now
Stock appreciation is confusing many that they are worth 750k when they are not.
Well doesn’t matter if they are worth 750k. They make 750k
Money vs. Opportunity/Responsibility. Different people choose different options. You choose.
They retire at google
Living the dream …
Its because they don’t know where to go after google once they are senior!
Very interested. In the same boat. There's other benefits beyond TC - Coinbase would be attractive for the new domain learning, mission-focused CEO, and remote-first culture, all of which you can't get at G.
Mission to centralize decentralized finance?😂 Coinbase doesn’t give a shyt about anything except making money, they’re the Robbing Hood of crypto. They literally banned any social justice or political conversations at work.
I like companies that exclusively focus on making money. Might not be your thing, but to each our own.
No- I made these mistakes in career too (TC - $1M) and later realized, I would have probably ended at the same NW 2-3 years later but could have had so much more fun on the way vs sticking with work that I didn’t really enjoy. Life and career are short. Most of us will end up with way more than we will be able to spend. Have fun at your work and stop getting over paranoid over $100k here and there in life.
How did you get to 1M TC? L7+ at big tech, or Senior+ at recently IPOed company, or HFT, or something else?
I hope you only mean folks on Blind aka 10%’ers by “most of us”, if so, you can still donate money or build charitable foundations.
Goto meta.
I went to Meta for the same reasons and like it so far. You will definitely make more in 4 years in here because of more generous refreshers. I’m surprised that those companies couldn’t match the comp. Did you pass the e6 bar?
What is the e6 bar?
@meta How is wlb at fb? Is it bearable if you only work 9-5 weekdays? When you joined fb and level? Joining fb.
If you are looking to maximize growth than leave. If you are looking to maximize NW, then stay and save/invest a ton from your sweet 3rd and 4th comp years before cliff. If you are looking to maximize job sat then leave because you will be unhappy staying in downlevel role another 2 years.
Thanks. Both TC and work are important. I am fine with moving on same TC. But, also want to make sure that I don’t regret because of TC. My thinking is that staying at L5, I will be stuck for another 2 years. And then move as L6 somewhere else. While, if I start as L6 today, I have opportunity to grow faster (both TC and opportunities)
Props on emphasizing self-growth and considering leaving with such high TC. Reasoning on sooner L6 jump makes sense, and also what GS said above about not caring a few hundred K difference. That said I think having even an 'ok' team and/or manager may be hard to come by, and might end up regretting this more than TC. There's probably always risk with new team though, so since taking that risk anyway and with your high batting at interviews, maybe can also consider other preipo unicorns with high upside potential to compensate for that risk.
Did u only get senior level offers at those companies? Staff/principal shouldve beat out your current tc Maybe try hft firms? Jane street, citadel, hrt?
Updated. All are staff. Will checkout HFTs, weren’t considering then yet. Thanks!
What’s wlb like at HFTs?
