Has anyone left a tech company for a more monotonous job? Any regrets? After taking a mental health leave earlier this year, I want to hang up the towel and work just a simple job everyday. All the money in the world can’t buy off a feeling of wasting away life.
I think finding out another way of making money is the best thing you could for yourself. Be it over the internet or however else you can approach it
Do what makes you happy, no point in making more money if you feel like you’re wasting away life
I have a find who left a SDE role at Google to work in a local bike repair shop. She described her life in tech as soulless and killing her. She makes substantially less now, but is much much happier.
Huh?
Just anon anecdotal data of people who have "quit the rat race" and are happier
The chill life may not bring peace either. The problem is not the rat race.
Please expound on this point
Don’t generalize @bloomberg
Quit to follow your passion. If your passion is something else, otherwise a low paying job may not bring that peace.
I’m passionate about doing nothing. Any suggestions on how to make money with that
Yes I have a job for you, https://youtu.be/SxW9M1Uozng?si=LPuijsmw5MgR0Zi-
Join a startup, or start your own company. You'll rediscover (or discover) your passion.
Really depends on the startup. They can also be fast tracks to burnout
People work at companies with shitty culture like Meta and Amazon and generalize an entire industry. There are tech companies which pay really well (as much as Meta if not even more), have good work, good WLB and good culture. Go find them.
I quit and I’m taking a break. Deep diving into my mental health and looking for good options to make the second half of my life one that resonates more with my authentic desires. I acknowledge that I’m privileged in having this opportunity but I wish everyone could. A monotonous job may not bring satisfaction but it may bring the space to explore what you actually want to do. A former coworker of mine actually quit and went back to school to a non tech field.

My understanding of the Holocaust was incorrect!
You can find a good paying tech job that is also mostly (or fully) remote, chill, and pays a lot. Could it be that it’s just meta or your team that has burned you out? Especially if you can work from a LCOL or MCOL area, you will lose the “rat race” feeling You should address mental health issues directly too.
I don’t think it gets much better than a chill, remote tech job. No commute, only working 35-40 hours a week, low stress, and still good pay? I can’t think of a lot of jobs that fit that bill.
I have a friend who works for such a company. Gets paid decently, lives in the middle of nowhere on a 9 acre land with his wife and dogs. He works for 6-7 hrs, then plays/hikes/camps or visits NYC when he craves society. Everytime I visit him, I wonder why am I grinding.
