Does Quora only make $20M in revenue? Sounds so low. And they managed to get a $2bn dollar valuation for it...that is insane https://www.vox.com/recode/2019/5/16/18627157/quora-value-billion-question-answer
These valuations are bullshit. If I invest $3.50 in my nephew's lemonade stand at a $100 billion valuation, it doesn't mean that lemonade stand is actually worth $100 billion. I only paid $3.50 and for something that's worth far far less. That's it.
lol yeah valuation is entirely made up by the investors.
There is a difference between common equity and preferred equity. You invest $3.50 at $100 billion valuation but then it sells for $10, you still get your $3.50 back.
I don't know man. I used to like Quora then Reddit happened. Quora users screams for attention and I have discovered Reddit subs which does that better. Say AMA for instance. Give a Man a Mask and He’ll Tell You the Truth? Reddit can also be deceptive. So that helps me to practice my socio- pyscho analysis skills.
Quora is a media company. It makes money by selling ads. Most media companies struggle to make money. Those that succeed (Facebook, LinkedIn) have some sort of unique targeting data they’ve been able to acquire that makes advertisers pay premiums... multiplied by daily usage. Which Quora does not have.
I don't understand how Quora even makes $20M. There's a graveyard of similar sites over the last 20 years, the basic concept can be coded by an undergrad in a couple weeks, and they don't provide any additional value beyond more general sites like Stack Overflow / Reddit / Googling Some Guy's Blog
Their SEO skills are on point, search some genuine questions and expect quora to be on page 1
The Quora userbase tilts heavily toward comparatively low-income folks in South Asia. Do you know how to monetize that? No? Neither does anyone else, for the time being.
They have 300 million monthly-active-users. They haven't focused on monetization, so their current revenue may not be a good indicator of revenue in 10 years.
Yeah, true. But when they do focus on it: it'll be pretty hard, no? FB is literally introducing new money as a solution to a similar problem.
Monetization for quora doesn't sound hard to me. Similar to Google search, you have a strong 'intent' signal from what the user clicked on ("Which luxury car should I buy"). Lack of intent signals is the biggest disadvantage FB has compared to Google (FB's advantage: identity signals)
🤔🤔🤔
How do they pay for anything ?
Good question
