Stop flocking to tech industry

Four years ago, Getting SWE job <— attend bootcamp, do some LC. Today, 2000 people applied to tier-9 tech company several hours after the job was posted. I got daily LinkedIn connection invites asking me to consider them for lowly SWE role in my low-tier employer. Everyone is adding Computer Science as their second major. The reason why SWEs had good pay and perks was because no one wanted to become SWEs, so company had to use money to attract people. It was a one-time market inefficiency. Now that there are infinite supply of CS grads and seriously declining amount of seats due to AI replacement and lack of new growth direction, SWE is just another mundane corporate job that pays peanuts. There’s nothing special about It. Stop flocking to this industry and find something you’re truly passionate about. TC: 210k YoE: 7

Don’t blame people for trying to get paid considering that every other field pays 🥜. I would rather struggle to break into the tech industry and get paid 🍌 than settle for a low-level trade, retail or restaurant job. A lot of people feel the same way, which is wh you see so many people trying to break into tech. Current TC: 90K, former retail/restaurant worker Expected TC: 105K

Hi MRM, often seen you on Blind 😄

LinkedIn TCorGO May 23, 2023

I thought you were at 105k now... do you just troll with the TC?

Big facts. Day in the life videos ruining everything. I wish everyone who made those videos get fired.

Day in life scumbags are the worst. We hired a bunch of do nothing college grads during Covid who knew nothing about technology and it ruined the market

ADP iGot5s May 23, 2023

So you want people to try joining an industry or take a job that pays half the TC of a SWE in a tier 10 org, with 2x or more work? Makes sense. SWE is popular because it’s still the best case scenario for pay, work life balance, and stress. If you’re gonna say something Blind stupid like Banking or Medicine, then lol

I’d say the limiting factor is cost of capital. There are problems to be solved and need for engineers anyway. The capital is too expensive, and that has a systemwide impact. Wait til interest rates go down, you’ll see. AI replacement goes in a different timescale.

No one wanted to be a SWE in 2019? Did you just graduate from college?

Goldman Sachs lclclc. OP May 23, 2023

In 2019, SWE was considered a last-resort in case someone couldn’t find a job in their field and desperately need an income. For example: “if I get rejected by quant roles and phd , I’ll just do SWE”. Or “If I can’t make it to banking or consulting, I’ll just do SWE”

Compass stormshere May 23, 2023

Yeah definitely not. Thats the worst take Ive ever heard

Eliminate work visas for 5 years for companies that do layoffs and watch this problem go away.

GrubHub 4546B May 23, 2023

You think they didn't layoff people on visas as well ?

ByteDance vPIG61 May 23, 2023

GrubHub, the idea is that if they are prohibited from replacing domestic labor with foreign labor, they won’t layoff just to churn.

I get paid a lot because I reason about extremely difficult technical problems that 95% of people could never comprehend. So I don’t mind others trying to get into the industry. Only a very small percentage of them will provide competition for me.

Charles Schwab OuaC56 May 23, 2023

Every SWE feels the same way

Klaviyo CsAGtt May 23, 2023

What percent of CS grads are in top 5 percentile of general population IQ? Probably a lot of them lol. Highly doubt your job is so complicated that most CS grads couldn’t do your job.

ServiceNow hkqd80 May 23, 2023

Day in the life of a 24 year old SWE making 300k a year. 1. Get free breakfast at office. 2. Hang out chatting with coworkers. 3. Get free lunch. 4. Play games in game room with coworkers. 5. Leave office and go to Equinox. 6. Get home order doordash for dinner to luxury apartment.

These are for PMs lol

To be fair, they are trying to make an entertaining video and make their life appear as fun and idealistic as possible. Thats what gets the most engagement. In reality they probably work 1-3 hrs between each of those "fun" events, but obviously no ones going to watch a video of them coding, going to meetings, and pooping for 6hrs a day. I do agree though that glamorizing SWE made it more appealing to new grads, maybe causing more people to be CS majors. I don't think this is a bad thing though, lots of us are driven by money and being a SWE is a decent path to getting paid well. A few years ago this may have been finance, or EE, or ChemE. I dont see anything inherently wrong with it.
