Looking to do a short 4 day trip to Raleigh area , for a possible move for my family. We will check out homes neighborhoods for one of the days … can someone possibly provide some other things to do as this will be a little mini vacation for us too. It will help us discover the area to figure out whether its where we want to go? Driving one to 2 hours from raleigh is fine. Is outer banks worth a trip? How long is needed for it?
Outerbanks is a bit more of a drive as the island itself is pretty huge too Also Asheville is supposed to be beautiful, plus there’s the Biltmore estate there
Drive we can do, but is a day trip (one night stayover worth it)?
Oh absolutely, although not sure what it’s like this time of the year (it’s been awhile since I lived in North Carolina) The outerbanks are beautiful
Places to visit - Chapel Hill, Durham (Google opens or opened a big office there), Duke Gardens, Duke University. Jordan Lake or Falls Lake. Also you can take 1-2 days to drive Blue Ridge Highway through Boone (the town is nice itself, also if you lived in Raleigh you would drive to Boone for skiing) to Asheville, and back via Charlotte. Also you may want to find future Apple campus location in Raleigh to consider neighborhoods around for living. I wouldn’t recommend to drive to Outer Banks this time of year, it’s better to drive scenery routes and enjoy fall colors.
Why is Outer banks not recommended?
Raleigh has a bunch of great restaurants. The state fair is happening right now. It goes through the 24th. You can pop over to Durham and do the Tobacco Row walk and go to the Original Burt's Bees Cabin. What do you and your family like to do?
1st week of november so we will miss the fair. Too bad my kids would have loved it. They are elementarty school kids so themes park, beach, lake, some kids related activity
You can head over the Fall Lake and Lake Jordan. Both of recreational areas. Pullen Park is the 5th oldest amusement park on the US. That can be fun for kids. There are several museums to go to.
Outer Banks and Asheville are both a little out of range for you ~3.5 hrs. If you’re bringing the kids, the NC Zoo in Asheboro is pretty phenomenal. I’d bake in extra time to explore the area. Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex, etc. are all very different.
If you're a beach person, Wilmington area and the beaches around it are about 2 hours away
