Rant! Losing hope.

35yo 11 yoe - MBA Finance TC: 130k Married with a 2 yo. Single income. This is my second post. I walked out the door from AWS and took the sev in October last year after getting pivoted. Took some time off to get my mind off of the BS and trauma my ex manager put me through after denying my team switch and started applying for jobs in December. I got a few referrals from Blind to a couple of FAANGs and startups but haven't even cleared the screening process yet. I have 7 yoe in Channel Sales/Partner Development from a startup in the Middle East and 3 years of Enterprise Account Management in the US. Moved to the US in 2017, no visa issues, will be naturalized in a couple months. I thought maybe landing another job/interviews shouldn't be too hard after being at AWS for 1.8 yrs with ASA cert but boy was I wrong. I humbled down and started again from scratch after moving to the US and was told my 7 yoe from abroad was useless here. Joined Oracle with a TC of 55k in LA then bumped to 130k after joining AWS which is where I was in 2017 working in the Middle East and tax free too. Trying hard to stay positive but it's getting harder and harder as time goes by and I keep seeing 'not selected' emails from every job I apply to. Anyone else in a similar situation? Would be nice to learn how everyone is handling situations like these. #hiring #recruiting #rejection #AWS #pivot

Hey man, I'm sorry you are in this position. Just keep going, you only need one offer. The amount of rejections don't matter.

Thanks for the kind words man! Trying to hang in there and stay positive.

It’s the darkest before dawn. Sending some luck and kindness towards you. Hold tight. Focus on yourself(your family) and you will nail it with a much higher TC. All the best.

Thank you! 🙏 Yes, keeping my head up high and family is definitely helping me stay sane and keeping the fire burning.

Same here, I went through quite a lot of rejection before finally getting a good offer. You just need 1 yes! Hang in there, the world is getting better now, so will the job market. If u have not done so, I would recommend u getting professionals to review your resume and even give u tips on how to handle interviews. I have not used one myself, but I’ve read it can be really helpful for some! Good luck! Don’t lose hope!

Wow! Funny thing is my wife was mentioning the same thing to me the other day. Her cousins got their resumes 'refined' by a professional and that helped them land good roles. I guess my ego was getting the best of me thinking 'hey I already have 10+ yrs of industry experience, I think I know how to write a resume' lol. I did create different versions of my resume which helped my land jobs at Oracle and AWS but I agreed with my wife to trying out getting my resume refined by a professional. Hah Thanks for the kind words and support. Keep us in your prayers! 🙏

Hang in there buddy, i also spend around 6 months searching before i could get a single selection. And once i got selected once, the selections kept pouring in. It takes time, just ignore the rejections. Keep at it.

Thank you for the words of wisdom.

This is relatively normal but you might want to seek help in improving your resume. It’s kind of like dating, a numbers game. Try to stay positive.

Amazon Deadmann OP Mar 20, 2021

Agreed. I mentioned in a reply above on how my wife gave me the same suggestion to get my resume checked by a professional. Thanks for the kind words!

I was in a similar spot due to covid. Wasn’t getting ANYTHING until I met the right person who knew the right people and showed incredible generosity with referrals. Focus on networking, and know that you are literally one well connected person away from those interviews.

There’s no giving up. Keep applying. A few things that worked for me: 1. Broaden your scope of search from just FAANG. There are awesome companies doing amazing bleeding edge work also they pay good. 2. Tailor your resume as per the job reqs. Don’t use a cookie cutter approach- if you can apply to 2-3 jobs in 30 mins, it means you are not giving each opportunity enough time. 3. Use your network. Your customers/clients should be your first outreach. Then use LinkedIn as much as possible. Hang in there!

Amazon Deadmann OP Apr 11, 2021

Agreed! Tryin to stay positive! I'm pretty much working on your first and last points but in your second point you mention to tailor my resume as per the job reqs and trust me, I've heard that before. My question is, how exactly do I 'tailor' my resume as per the job req? Should I change my JD/title in my previous roles to what the new role requires (basically lie) or maybe I am missing something? Would love to get more perspective on this. Thanks!

Amazon FfEs14 Apr 12, 2021

My 2nd point is the most important one. As you know recruiting uses applications to sort resumes against Job reqs. The applications usually screen the resumes and highlight it to recruiters. Hence it’s important to tailor your resume against the job req. How do you do that? 1. Read the job req and identify key skills and terms. There is a possibility that you have those skills and key terms but they are written in a different format in your resume. Make sure to match the key skills/terms. 2. Don’t lie in your resume but don’t blindly apply as well. If the req is looking for a software dev engineer and your last role was a PM, even if the recruiting app highlights your resume the recruiter will not call you. This natural alignment must exist. Try the above out and see if it helps.

DM me, planning to start a new job soon and should be able to send you a referral at a company that pays well.
