Rate This Startup Idea

Okay - here’s the pitch… Everyone has a million streaming subscriptions: Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, YouTube, Showtime, etc… it’s out of control. At a given time, the average user is only watching 2-3 shows doesn’t need/want all the random content these subscriptions have to offer. Instead, I propose we build a single app that allows you to pick up to 10 shows or movies across all of these subscriptions (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) for a flat rate of $25 per month with ads or $40 without ads. Users can refresh their “picklist” once per month. The streaming subscriptions providers would get a monthly kickback based on if users add their content to their list AND all the revenue from ads they sell to their customers. For example, if a user added 10 Netflix shows to their list, Netflix would get a kickback of 80% (or whatever number/unit economics makes sense). What do you think? TC: $300K EDIT: Think about this fact… last quarter Netflix posted 74M subscriptions across US and Canada. But, there are 125M families in the US alone. So, there’s untapped potential of another 50M families that haven’t pulled the trigger on Netflix yet.

You don’t get it.

Every aggregator eventually gets a competitor and will no longer be an aggregator.

But it can’t keep going on forever like this. The alternative is that people just cancel the subscriptions they don’t want because it’s not enough value for the cost.

I saw a similar website yesterday, I closed the browser tab.

We could also like curate content playlists and maybe livestream those playlists throughout the day so the user doesn’t need to figure out what to watch and when to watch it.

Also maybe have a “playlist package” so curated content can be bundled and users can save money on the playlists they want to watch.

Bold of you to assume people know what they want to watch ahead of time

Adobe adobefan OP Jan 20, 2023

There is an untapped market of people who don’t want the whole subscription, but just want to watch a show or two.

Amazon Rewind⏪ Jan 20, 2023

True, bring the cost down to $15 and you might bring in more of them. But you have a very tough road ahead convincing Netflix and Hulu. You're literally risking their existing user base

Verizon BigDreamss Jan 20, 2023

Netflix and Hulu will be against this. I suspect majority of customers watch less than 5 shows. Netflix wants to use their top shows to get more customers. This would kill that agenda. But I see a point, as a customer why pay full amount when you only watch a very few shows.

Adobe adobefan OP Jan 20, 2023

They might be more open to it if you make ads mandatory. It gives them another outlet to pitch to their B2B customers. We would let Netflix and Hulu take all ad revenue home

Amazon havefaith Jan 20, 2023

1. So if a new show comes on Netflix, U want me to wait 1 month to refresh my list to be able to watch? 2. To build this aggregator, you need to have specific APIs already present in Netflix, Prime Video, hulu etc… who’s gonna convince and build those in ALL the streaming services? PS: great focus on customer obsession but may be need better solution

Adobe adobefan OP Jan 20, 2023

The dev effort shouldn’t be that much… licensing would be more of a struggle

Amazon havefaith Jan 20, 2023

Haha you really are underestimating convincing all big tech to build public APIs to distribute their proprietary content and collaborate with competitors (: Dont mean to discourage but goodluck

Amazon jandyassy Jan 20, 2023

Sounds like an awful idea and will be licensing hell

Experian exYG53 Jan 20, 2023

Great idea, and yes let's also make commercials mandatory. Then maybe we can call it cable?
