UPDATE 4/25: Friend got the verbal offer. Written offer tomorrow. Location for Orlando is up to $175 which is good for fl but the stock vesting schedule is horrible (first grant would be dec of 2025 and only 1/3 of it?!!) Once he gets written offer he plans to ask about remote. The offer is in lowest pay zone so it would mimic his own mid west area which is also probably lowest pay zone. Will keep everyone updated on what happens lol Friend is expecting an offer as Sr TPM from disney. Unfortunately he cannot move from his very rural midwest town due to family issues. Does disney offer remote for special circumstances? He’s wondering if he should ask because he doesnt want to risk losing that offer (he will move if he has to since he is jobless right now) Thanks #tpm #disney #interview #offer#tech
Move to Orlando which is wonderful
In my experience- remote work is a thing of the past unless there is a real specialization. Now- if we can get out of the employer market - maybe the pendulum can swing back. Again- personal experience- we are getting hundreds of applicants per role because of the market now
Ah understood. Thanks!
I seriously doubt you’re getting hundreds of qualified local candidates. Why do companies want to hire a 3rd tier local employee over a 1st tier remote employee?
Homestreet it’s because Boomer CEOs can’t fathom that anything other than the way things were for them coming up professionally is valid. They think that buys in seats equates to people getting more work done than if they’re “unsupervised” working remotely. It’s antiquated thinking and we won’t get past it until the next generation of CEOs in major companies take over and lead the market in hiring the best people wherever they are and get Wall Street aligned to this thinking as well. The CEOs are so dumb they can’t fathom that it comes down to the work ethic of the individual and not the environment and they also think they can be successful controlling employees more if they’re in person. Plenty of people check the box for visibility in the office but by showing up and then waste a significant amount of time not actually doing work. I used to know one guy who’d show up at the office in the morning and then go see a movie in the middle of the day 2-3 times a week as he’d successfully convinced his bosses he was overloaded when in reality his work load was practically nonexistent.
DEET is more accommodating of remote roles. Ask during negotiating/offer stage
Don't quote me on this but if you search Medical Accompdations on the internal HR site there is a process for this. Remote accommodations can be approved to care for family for limited amounts of time. But they'd still be expecting you to be working from the state as your home office. Working from another state (or country) is a tax issue.
Only ask after you get a written offer, otherwise no chance. There is a very strict policy these days, because if one employee gets accommodated everyone else will clamor as well.
They are going to code him as remote if his physical address isn't near an office so he should ask whether the position requires relocation. Disney is making remote hires here and there (at least My team is) so this shouldn't be a problem if the hiring manager doesn't really care. I'm connected to a team in parks and a team in DEET and both are perfectly fine with remote work up to at least the director. In my current team in DEET they're ok with it up to VP. It seems like you're more likely to be able to make it work if your team's base of operations is in California. It seems like the teams based in Florida are stricter about coming into the office. A friend did formally apply for a temporary accommodation, which apparently he renews on a regular basis, because he has a special needs kid, and it was no problem, according to him. Technically they only allow a limited number of renewals but it hasn't been a problem for him.

He shouldn't ask lest he remove himself from consideration. He needs to get the offer then if they mandate relocation he should ask for flexibility. Otherwise he will have to go and leave the fam behind for a while at least.
