I know that it really depends on several things but how much really work you do per week as a mid-level or senior SWE? How much time for coding, meetings, discussion, writing documents or presentations, learning? For now, I spend 3h per day in the morning on coding and then 4-5h the afternoons for meetings, writing, reading papers, learning and discussing ideas or projects preparations … Share your real time not time scrolling or YouTube .. I am preparing for interviews for mid level - senior level for faang for mid-end 2023. TC: 90k, 8yoe (PhD)
Lol
There's no real standard and you'll find teams similar to your current gig and you'll find teams that grind you into a bloody nub. You probably know that as a rule, Amazon culture is more hardcore than Google (for example), but that's not 100% true. Pay attention when you're interviewing to who the leaders are, ask about the culture, talk to people on the team and pay attention to whether they look energized or burned out. Good luck!
Thanks a lot for your advice ☺️
How is hard to be a senior MLE at Google coming from non faang company? I already managed multiple projects and leaded 3 majors projects in cross functional and transnationals teams. I am not a faster coder but really good and project and research managements, strategy, vision and mentoring
Hours worked is mostly a personal skill. It's a vocal minority working insane hours, and although it is sometimes caused by a toxic environment, more often it's caused by a lack of time management skills, an unwillingness to push back, a general misunderstanding of the expectations, etc.
You are right! I work 35h - 40h a week with no stresse and always get exceed or superb ratings for the last 5 years
With a PhD, soon you will 3x your salary...all the best
I Hope! I was targeting Amazon applied scientist role for NLP at Alexa but after Alexa shutdown I don’t know if it is a still possible.
I've found my PhD to not really be an asset unless the company was specifically looking for someone in my subject matter, but that could depend on where I applied. tc 115k 😔
