Rear ended this morning

Got rear ended on a right turn. It was raining heavily. Visible damage on the back. Exchanged insurance information with the other car who was at fault. Didn't call cop as I was running late. What is the next step? Do I call my insurance and provide them the details of the other driver and they will figure it out? Would it impact my insurance premiums? Any advice??

Sorry to hear. Glad no injuries it seems? Yeah call insurance, tell them the truth, let them fix the car and deal with claims. You should not take stress for this. If your fault, premiums may go up by 20-30 percent per month.

If you got hit from back, it’s always other persons fault. So u r all clean.

Not always true. What if you were turning left and was hit in back by oncoming car?

Always, if you hit the bumper you are following too close

Is one really supposed to call police in these situations? I️ see that advice but it seems nuts for minor issues. In any case, yeah just contact your insurance. They will contact the other persons insurance. Just went through this myself.

If the cost of damages is less than $700 (Think I read that on a CA DMV site) and there's no damage to life - then you are advised not to call the cops. Insurance will take care of it.

I dunno man. That's what the DMV site says. Am just the messenger.

I had this happen to me last year. I had gotten the other person’s insurance information and went to them directly. Since i was rear ended and it was clearly their fault, they took care of it right away. Gave me rental car for 1 month and fixed up mine very well through body shop of my choice

Not true. If you are not at fault, your cost can't go up. Just call your insurance and let them deal with it

File online police report then go to your insurance co

If you file a police report, it'll end up on your car history aka Carfax

You don't need a police report. I just went through this. Call the others parties insurance company and file a claim. You don't need to go through your insurance company at all. You can but not any benefit.

Agree with this. Went through this recently as well. Had to push the other parties insurance though, they were very slow.

You may need to go through your own insurance if the other person is uninsured or underinsured - or if they dispute who is at fault. For OP, it seems the amount of damage is small enough, and the details provided support an easy finding out fault, so it should not be necessary.
