Received offer from Microsoft: how to renege

Hi, college senior here. I accepted a job with company A in the fall because it was an exploding offer. I recently received a better offer from Microsoft. How can I gracefully tell company A I'm no longer interested in working for them? Should I do it over the phone or email? What would a sample email look like? Thanks!

Sample email: Hi <recruiter>, Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview with <company A>. Unfortunately, I’ve decided to take an offer with another company. I really appreciate your help and I enjoyed interviewing with <company A>. Best, Your name

This sounds like I received the offer but haven’t accept it yet. In my case I did accepted the offer. But I like how this is concise and straight to the point.

It doesn’t say that you received an offer at all in the sample email. It just says you enjoyed interviewing with them but you’re going to have to decline.

Why is the offer better? Is it more money, better technology, better location? Are you sure you are considering the right things before you decline the offer you already have? Doing it over the phone would be more adult IMO. Also it’s spelled renege

Yes all of the above. Better pay, better location. Tech stack is about the same. Yea I feel like doing it over the phone will be more professional? I’m just more nervous to do it over the phone vs email.

Hey recruiter, exploding offers are just an intimidation tactic and demonstrate that you’re a shitty recruiter or the company you’re recruiting for is shit. The only reason to have an exploding offer is if there is an immediate need on a specific team that needs to be filled. Even then, the recruiter should use higher compensation as incentive rather than intimidation of an exploding offer. For those reasons, recruiter, you can go fuck yourself.

OP, you signed the offer letter and have a start date?

I did it once a week before I was supposed to start. Reason was a better offer elsewhere without having to relocate. The only thing was I felt bad for the recruiter, who probably wouldn’t be getting the bonus that she worked so hard for. But as far the company itself is concerned, they don’t mind laying off people when necessary and therefore you shouldn’t mind breaking ties with them if necessary. After all, it is ‘at will’ employment here in the US.

If you like awkward silences, do it over the phone.
