A Google recruiter reached out because he finds me a good fit for Google and will be calling me tomorrow. I'm not prepared at all and might need months to prepare (given that getting into google is difficult). How do I navigate the phone conversation so that I don't come across as dumb for not being prepared especially when he liked my profile.
Thank him for giving you this opportunity and tell him you only have 5 minutes to discuss the application process. Cut him off at 5 minutes if you have to. Then when it comes to scheduling the actual phone screen you can say you want to be prepared so can it be X weeks/months in the future.
Interview process is generally long at google. You can always chose date which is is couple of months apart and prepare.
Just talk to recruiter and then set the expectation that you will need couple of months before you can interview - say you need to prepare for interview and also need to deliver on must have features on next release etc.. Here is my timeline after recruiter reached out... Call + 50days - phone interview Call + 70days - onsite Call + 82days - offer (time from onsite to offer was fast due to a competing offer) Call + 90 days - accepted offer It is a rough timeline .. but very close

Did you give 50 days time upfront or told the recruiter that you will reach out whenever you are ready
You can also say that now is not a great time for you to make a move (job / personal stuff / whatever), but you'd be looking to start the process in a couple of months.
Oh you sweet summer's child. Recruiters say that to everyone, and you're not even scheduled for a technical interview yet.
People giving way so much importance to preparation: If you cannot interview without preparing for months, how can you be sure you can do your jobs everyday without 'preparation'? Do hiring teams understand that they generate false positives this way?
You *do* get months of preparation for your everyday job. You're not expected to contribute at full capacity until a few months in, and you may have training/mentoring/bootcamp during that time.
You didn't get the point: bootcamps may work for on-boarding, but they don't prepare you for the real job if you weren't qualified for the job in the first place...
First call is just to verify your profile and experience! They might ask - tell me about yourself? Why would you like to join Google? Why would you like to leave Cisco? Think through these questions and have real, clear answers. Google Recruiter is a partner till the end of what will be a long process and it will benefit you to have an impressed recruiter through the process. It helped me 😀 Also, take as long as you need to prepare and go confidently into the interviews. Give your best shot, it will be worth it!
