Background: I was made redundant in January from a Manager L7 position in Marketing at Qualtrics and live in a city/country with very few relevant jobs coming up at my level with the current economy. I have often wished to make a career change into partnerships but never got an offer for lack of specific experience. Opportunity: I have been offered a temporary position at Google to cover for someone on Maternity leave (10-month contract) in agency partnerships but at an L5 level. I can easily stomach the pay-cut if it's temporary, especially seeing as I'm not working anyway right now and the prospects look bleak for the time being. The upside, other than a salary, is that I'd get some exposure to partnerships and also have the opportunity to network like hell from inside Google for a job thereafter, assuming they start recruiting again in about a year's time. My slight concern is that I may get pigeon-holed as an L5 IC at Google by taking this job and affect my career adversely moving forward, though my understanding is that I would essentially be applying as an external candidate for any job thereafter, seeing as the contract is temp. My hunch is that it's worth it to get back in the game and get a chance at partnerships/Google. I don't do very well sitting on my ass for too long. Any thoughts would be much appreciated! #tech #google #paycut
Don't do it
How come? I'd love to hear your rationale!
Seems like you know the answer OP, go for it!
Take it. Even Google is a nightmare to work for at the moment, having the brand name on your resume and different projects to work on can’t hurt. I’d like to know your TC and YOE to see how much of a pay cut it would be. In this market, take anything you can get and keep looking unless you serious red flags that make you consider otherwise. Note that conversion is a hard decision in this market, and I’ve rarely heard of someone coming into Google as a contractor (TVC) and converting to FTE. However, since you’re motivated, you can easily turn this opportunity into something greater. Good luck! TC: 90K, on a C2H and was in your position once
Thanks for your advice! TC: $311k (outside of US) YoE: 17 This temp role would be a 25% drop in base pay with no stock, so a theoretical TC drop of 40% (I say theoretical as Qualtrics stock went to the shitter after I joined, so that TC never materialized anyway)
I would never accept down-leveling or a pay cut in a job transition.
Don't say the level you're supporting...just say the responsibilities and say it's contract workbut try to get a 12-month contract for 10 month's of work.
If they like you and you perform, they may be able to keep you on. I’m wrapping (2) 6-month contracts and just got the green light that they are able to keep me in a new role. (This is all as a TVC)
Do it
