Regretting joining Google

Joined maybe 8 months ago. At the time I felt underpaid due to my company’s low performing stock and my Google offer was a lot higher than I expected (~240k for L3). At my previous company I had a lot of responsibilities and ownership, and I felt like I was on a fast track for promos. Here I feel like I haven’t learned anything since joining. It seems all my team does is maintain a legacy system whose codebase is an absolute mess. Most of my days are spent cleaning up legacy code or slowly rolling out experiments to deprecate some old feature. It’s killing me. I asked my manager today if all this would at least help me get promoted and he indicated that it would look good but I’d need to be designing or coding to hit L4. The few projects needing design just go to our senior guys. I’ve been looking for other teams to join but I’m not seeing anything I’m interested in that’s looking for L3s. Really not sure if I should leave Google or try to find a better team, but all the teams Im seeing that need L3s look like the same legacy grunt work :/

That's how all big corporates roll

It’s just slowly sucking the life out of me :( I came from a smaller company where I was coding every day, designing new features, and actually had an impact.

Oracle PgEo55 Jun 18, 2019

Exactly. Higher pay but totally soul sucking to be buried under corporate process.

F5 Networks bhai-log Jun 18, 2019

Want to exchange with me. Would happily take that Google job.

Google blah🤯 Jun 18, 2019

240k ?????? Wtf? I am L3 earning half!!!

Google 🐱🦊🐹☮️ OP Jun 18, 2019

I had an counter offer from a hedge fund w/ 250k TC and 100k signing bonus

Google blah🤯 Jun 18, 2019

How many YOE?

eBay oldgrads Jun 18, 2019

Maybe you could start with 20% project see if there is a project you are interested in. Btw, which type of project you are looking for? I know cloud ai has some good stuff to work on

Google sellihca Jun 18, 2019

20 percent is a great way to underperform in your team. The 20 part becomes more like 40 as you are trying to impress the other team that does not have headcount.

Amazon broke&dumb Jun 18, 2019

You described a vast majority, well over 50%, of software developer jobs.

Apple YbWI55 Jan 19, 2022

You sure it is just “over 50%” ???

TrueCar Twhh78 Jun 18, 2019

What company previous?

Google 🐱🦊🐹☮️ OP Jun 18, 2019

Snap. Doesn’t help that the stock has literally tripled since I left :p

TrueCar Twhh78 Jun 18, 2019

If you want to go down a few tiers, have great WLB, lots of impact and interesting projects, work in LA/remote, ping me

Amazon amznadssde Jun 18, 2019

If u want action, join FB. Easier to get promo to e5 because there won’t be shortage pf projects. I am considering going back some day although my amazon team is a lot more professional and chill

Google 🐱🦊🐹☮️ OP Jun 18, 2019

I’ve heard this as well. I’ve got a friend starting there soon so might get a referral and interview

Booking.com u.r.a.🐈 Jun 18, 2019

Or join Amazon. People have been talking about how much work they have at Amazon.

Long way to go for a humblebrag

Google 🐱🦊🐹☮️ OP Jun 18, 2019

Sorry if it came out like a brag. I wanted to rant, that’s it

Grab whatalife Jun 18, 2019

It didn’t come out like a brag. Atinlay2 is just being Atinlay2

Paychex dunder1 Jun 18, 2019

Imagine doing exactly that in a lower company and getting paid less than half. Help me if you can please

Google 🐱🦊🐹☮️ OP Jun 18, 2019

I’m sorry 😢

I'm kinda in the same boat. Joined FB from a smaller company, and I feel like a chisel is slowly chipping off small parts of my soul everyday. I'm currently in the interview process with several startups. Hang in there

Thank you :) Glad to hear from someone else in the same situation. Hope everything works out for you
