Reject a job offer after signing the offer letter

I recently got a job offer which I accepted, signed the offer letter and went through background check. After all the process I got an offer from another company that I’m way more interested in. How I can tell the hiring manager that I’m not joining their team? Is it even legal to sign a contract and withdraw before joining?

I know many people has done this. Tell them you got better opportunity which you think is better for your career, and you are leaning towards joining that.

Is it legal though?

Of course it is. If it’s legal to quit the very second you walked in the door, it’s legal to just never show up.

Yep. Completely legal to quit at any time with no notice. Also, signing an offer is not an employment contract

You're fine, the contract you signed didn't mean they own you

Yes. It is legal. I have done that. If they can fire you any day, why can't you decide to join another company any day for your own benefit? It is okay to be selfish. At the end of the day you are just another head count for the company. What matters to them is money. If they are not earning any they won’t mind firing you immediately. So. Be little selfish!

Yup! I’ve done it as well. It is what it is...

Your contract is just an agreement describing the terms of your employment (compensation, etc), not a promise to be employed by them. Exceptions are some jobs that have incentives like hiring bonuses, which generally come with some time commitment on your part. But you’re still able to walk away whenever you want, you’ll likely just have to repay the bonus, or make some type of similar amends.
