Hi, I have recently interviewed with Red Hat and was rejected after final round of interview. In the first round, I was given a "take home assignment" which I had to complete within 2-3 days. It was a scripting task to be completed in bash and Java(or any programming language), in addition to that there was a git assignment focused on git branches and solving merge conflicts I had completed the assignment within deadline and was called for next round. The interviewer said that I was the only candidate who was able to complete both the assignments. This interview revolved around the implementation of the assignment and explained them my approach. I did the java scripting in Python (instead of Java) as it was mentioned to use the tech of my familiarity. During the interview, they asked me how comfortable I am with Java. I said I'm familiar with java syntax, and haven't worked on since many years. I need 1-2 weeks to brush up my concepts. The interview came to end. Next day(today), received a rejection mail from recruiter. I'm not having much experience in this industry. Is a particular language more preferred for intern? I'm sorry to hear that it didn't go as expected. > and haven't worked on since many years. This is something I would not be more likely to hear from an intern. I expect you have 0 experience, but you have studied a couple of years working on different projects. In your case, Java was just another language. It sounds like you don't remember at all or you will take more time to learn up to the expected level in Java. Try to avoid statements like these in future interviews. Wish you all the best with your job hunting.
From my experience the whole “use your preferred tech but this is an X job” is a trap. I had the same with a company a few years ago and it was C sharp instead of Java. Same thing rejected though I did it flawlessly. It’s basically a handicap to all other applicants. But a rejection letter can come for any X reason, so don’t overthink it.
You dodged a bullet :)
