Relocating With Google

Hope all is well! I recently accepted an offer with Google and will be moving across the country in a few months as part of my relocation. I’ve never relocated for a job before and haven’t started at Google yet, but am already being asked to lock in a move date. The relocation contact said I would need to use PTO to move during the week (as I will be driving due to complications with traveling with my dog). My recruiter said that Google should be flexible with a during the week move. I’m coming into this role with 0 PTO as it needs to be accrued. Do you really have to use PTO for a move? Any insight is helpful! #Google #relocation

Added Context: the relocation contact works for a third party company and not for google directly

Just push your start date later if you don't want to use PTOs

Every relo I’ve done has been during the time after my old job and before the new one - that is my official start date was after the move. Do you have visa issues or something that is putting pressure on an immediate start date or is the move happening months after due to starting remote during the pandemic? Is talk to your new manager. The recruiter may be sharing the official policy and if it’s after your start date your manager prob won’t care if you actually take pto

Mandatory start date and relocation later due to the pandemic, is my situation. I start July 12th but we are remote until September so I have until then to move

noogler here, relo person was a pain in the ass and never responded to any of my emails, finally emailed her manager asking to do a cash out and figured it myself

Talk to your manager and it will work out. Here is my experience when relocating for Amazon and I suspect same would work for Google. I moved in two stages, first myself and then my stuff. For the second stage I needed 2-3 days off. My manager asked me to do what I needed to do and not worry about filing the time off or working from home during move.

Thank you! That’s good insight

It’s honestly all luck. Sometimes the contract company is good, sometimes it’s shit. Talk to your manager about PTO, at the end of the day it’s really up to them. Most won’t ask you to burn it.
