Been asked to relocate to Chicago from late Q1 2023. Currently based in London. Not what I asked for but it is only option to continue in current role or need to quit. GE R consolidating global team in Chicago and moving some roles to low cost region. Current TC in London 105k£ , Chicago TC offered 182k$. Salary wise (I guess) could save more in Chicago(Single person). Quality of life - hands down London wins. Never been to Chicago during winters, heard it can be brutal. Either to live through that or go jobless and try to find a new job competing with tons of laid off resume waved at HRs’ who are going to have a I-am-the-king-of—the-world 2023. Happy to hear any weird truthful comments about salary range or quality of life in US. Cheers.
I have lived in Downtown Chicago for the past 5 years and love it. I don’t feel like moving anywhere within the US. Bay Area seems unaffordable plus you need a car. Chicago is cleaner than New York and much more affordable to actually live in the city. With $180k you can live in a building with beautiful river/lake views. Plus everything is walkable. Just avoid high crime areas like South and West sides of the city.
Cheers mate! What would be the real take home pay for 180k$ ? Healthcare is covered by company.
My estimate would be slightly less than 10k per month. Im assuming a 4% 401K saving. A good 1 bed apt would cost around $1.8k - $2.5k. Will your work be remote?
I would accept but start looking for a new job ASAP and then quit. I wouldn’t want to rebuild my entire life for a job if I liked London.
Chicago is actually pretty nice, this is a good opportunity, move, if you don't like it, move back in a year or two
Chicago is cheaper than London.
Take it! Opportunity to get out of the UK and move to a solid US company when things pipe down.
Winter is brutal in Chicago. Like brutal. Windy, wet, cold. I’m Canadian and I don’t think I’d like living in Chicago in the winter. There are unexpected costs in America, like healthcare. More in insurance, more in direct payments, etc. Chicago has worse infrastructure— not great public transit in comparison to London, no easily accessible trains, etc.. Chicago is much cheaper than London for living costs. Chicago is great for culture (but not quite equal to London). Chicago is a decent jumping off point for traveling North America. I’d personally stay in London.
Public transit in Chicago is comparable to London but maybe not New York. Definitely better than anything on the West Coast. If you're in one of the outer rings of London I feel like the hassle of having to ride into a central location to connect is about the same. Harsh winters happen so often that Chicago knows how to handle it. Get a good coat and you're fine. I've experienced snowstorms in Chicago and London and Chicago wins hands down. In London the Met will announce it for a solid week and people still don't know how to do anything when a few flakes fall. No ploughs, no salt, just a slushy mess with things shutting down and people hoping it melts. Even in really bad winter weather, Chicago is well run enough to move the snow and move on with life.
Honestly if you have a family and want a nice home with a yard go for Chicago suburb… if you are single downtown Chicago but I would take Chicago over London for that amount of money
You mention that you are single. People will love your British accent and think you're smart no matter what you say. You will be seen as special just because you're from the UK and will be able to date a lot. It will be a fun adventure. I was an expat for a year and loved it
Food is far superior in Chicago so that’s a plus. I think you can def save more here than in London as well.
Food in Chicago superior to London ? You kidding me mate ?
NYC has better food than Chicago, London easily beats Chicago by miles.

182k in Chicago as a single is great. Opportunity to travel if you are into that.
