It was well known that he never got anything below a "greatly exceeds" in his entire 8 year career at Meta, and was logged in during chemotherapy sessions to drive multiple high impact projects as tech lead. However life sometimes is cruel and it's not enough to save him as he succumbed to this aggressive form of brain cancer, leaving a legacy of move fast and break things for his fellow metamates to follow. Rip Eric. May there be more highly complexly engineering challenges to tackle and high expectations to meet in heaven.
I feel sad this is how he chose to spend his final days.
I think of it as he spent his last days doing what he loved.
Every life is different. I know a lot of people who might do this.. think it would be traveling around the world for me, but who knows!
We all thought those perf reviews will save him, but we were wrong
very tone deaf and remarkably obtuse comment. Kindly consider deleting this comment. Your tongue-in-cheek humor, if you can call it that, is not required here.
He got PIPed from life
Cringe post
unpopular opinion but working while having cancer is scummy on meta’s part. We shouldn’t be celebrating corporations working someone to death. RIP Eric Sun 💕Wish I got to know them.
That is the take OP wants you to have. Did you consider what Eric wanted or did you just assume?
Read what I replied to your comment Meta. You’re having a hard time differentiating quality of life and work fulfillment.
This post is disgraceful. Some people find joy and purpose in work while you find it watching Netflix.
And some people find joy watching Netflix while other people spend their time being just a number to a faceless corporation. There’s a difference between quality of life and work fulfilment.
And some people find joy working with peers to overcome difficult challenges while other people spend their time sitting alone in isolation consuming subpar content. There's a difference between quality of life and waiting to die.
Sad for him and may he RIP. However if he spent his last few months in life ensuring people’s data and privacy was stolen to make profits for a dipshit company, then his life and brilliance were wasted. May brilliant and smart people spend their life building things for the betterment of society.
Harsh and possibly unfair but also a necessary wake up call for some people to have perspective.
Imagine being this subservient to a corporation. I don't buy the excuse of finding fulfillment through work in this case. It would be one thing if the job entailed solving impactful real-world scientific and engineering challenges or problems. But nope, all of this for some entertainment related tech at a social media company.
OP thanks for starting this thread so random people on the Internet could call Eric Sun subservient and drag his name through the mud. Do you understand how disrespectful this is?
I was typing up a response but realized I couldn’t find a way to say it that didn’t sound really racist against asians.
RIP

>succumbed to brain cancer despite repeatedly receiving stellar ratings Not sure if this is intentional but this wording makes it sound like high ratings and job performance should have an impact on the outcome of cancer
I think maybe this went over your head
It might have been. Stress is relatively high at Meta and it could play a role on your health. It definitely did for me .
