I know it's a bad idea and there's a probability of black listing, but can I do this after the Visa process is initiated? I have an on-site with G/F and I want to just explore my options. I didn't expect to clear the initial interviews but now that I did, I want to just try hard and go to either of the places based on offers. The offer is from one of the two tagged companies. Appreciate your thoughts.
Microsoft reneging is like you are banned from LinkedIn GitHub don’t know how many future companies it will acquire. Same holds for twitch in case of amazon. Think carefully !! Better not to. Work for a year and a half and then switch to faangs
I reneged on an offer and the hiring manager told me through a third party to go fuck myself haha. I guess I'm blacklisted forever in there now, but it was worth it.
Lol mind telling which company did you went to? Also not surprised they are mad. I'd not do it if I got all my interview calls around the same time.
It was kind of a complex situation where giving out details will out me easily! TC was the same but other factors made it worth my while.
I reneged as well recently, a couple days after accepting. but was lucky because after accepting verbally they didn't rush me with any signing requests to lock it in. You seem to be in deeper. I am so glad I did though because I followed my gut and feel happier. It's obvious that you are wanted/valued. So if your exploration of the other opportunities is more for validation, I would reconsider reneging. If you have red flags/bad feeling about the current offer, reneg asap youll feel better. If it were me I would focus on the intangibles of the diff companies at this point, moreso than the comp. If there are no red flags about current offer, don't worry about grass being greener elsewhere. I'd say jump in and commit to the offer and make the most of it. Good luck
I know one of my friend has put down the offer of Microsoft for G and both companies filled the H1 and later Microsoft one was picked up and G was not picked up in lottery, so my friend is working in Google India, until they sort of visa. So keep this in mind while making the decision at this point
I'm a hiring manager at Amazon, and would not hesitate to blacklist someone who accepted an offer, had Amazon pay for a visa, and then ghosted. Remember that Earns Trust leadership principle?
How about if they accepted signed offer and reneged before start date citing better opportunity elsewhere with more comp/benefits etc?
It depends on the transparency of the candidate, I suppose, but that is not a good sign. The reason for the blacklist is not personal, it just represents an assessment that investing in the candidate is unlikely to yield returns. Interviewing, creating an offer, and doing visa applications all costs a good deal, as does ramping up an employee to actually be productive.
Is there a TC / leveling difference or straight up just company name diff?
I think it heavily depends. If they put you up for H1b the odds are not in favour with you anyways and in case it doesn't work out they will rescind the offer. So you could just wait. Any other company would NOT get you into the US anyways this year, as the application window for H1b will likely close in first week of April.
So you don't have another offer yet? Don't renege. If you get an offer, you can just quit after a week or two.
My advice is, do the interview and if you get the offer, say no because you had to accept the other offer. The competing company can always hire you later if you had ever gotten an offer. Don't renege an offer. It's bad for you and everyone else
I was planning to do this. I'll basically ask for the offer expiry and move there eventually if it's end up being a better offer. Thanks.
Also FYI, not FB of G, but my friend got an offer from Amazon and couldn't join for a similar reason. He hated the other job and joined Amazon 1 year later without formal interview...
It is probably not a good idea to do that now since you’ve signed the offer and the hiring company has spent resources on getting the process started etc. And that also means that you wish to “explore” yet. Usually not desirable. Having said that, you COULD state personal reasons to “hold off” the visa process (but also remember they could have done premium processing so it might also mess up the visa application). Tread carefully. Don’t go just based off of “brand name”. If you have signed the offer, there must have been a reason. Think to yourself if that reason makes sense yet.
This makes sense. Thanks for your input. For a start, I'll probably try to hold the Visa process. I asked the attorney on the status and tentative deadline. They told me they are still preparing the packet and will file in the first week of April. I can finish my onsite next week and finalize on something based on the offers. I am still not sure if I'll even get the offers, but just wanted to prepare for that scenario.
Even if you do get the offer, remember that G takes a good 2-2.5 months to get back with details on numbers etc. Do you want to wait that long?
