Folks of Blind, Thinking of transitioning to Applied Scientist (AS) role (have worked on several ML projects as an engineer, now leading some to production and hopefully will have some scientific impact). I am faced with two options: (1) Transition from engineer into Applied Science and continue building my career like that at Amazon (2) Jump switch and apply to scientist roles in other companies (Apple, FB, etc) Confused which is a better option? How is the Applied Scientist role at Amazon perceived externally? Will it be a good boost to my career later on if I stay? #dataanalytics #datascience #researchscientist TC: 310k

Is meta really worth the wait?
Do you have a PhD? If not it's hard to apply for ML scientist roles at Apple or Fb. You should be able to get in as ML SWE or ML research engineer if you have publications already.
What if I follow option 1 and work as AS at Amazon for few years.. would that build my case for RS positions at Apple, fb etc? Hoping to get a publication or two meanwhile.. Or is the PhD strict requirement?
AS at Amazon is equivalent to ML engineer role, so it's unlikely you'll be an RS at Fb. If you have quite a few publications, then maybe. Two papers with low citations won't change it. You can get a role that's similar to AS at Fb, if title doesn't matter then this is a good route to go down.
