I am a ML Engineer at Facebook AI Applied Research. I don’t have a PhD but would like to grow into a Research Scientist role starting with publishing papers at top conferences. My current org priorities are more towards product impact rather than publishing papers. So, I’d like to know about the opportunites at Google Brain or Google Research. Can someone shed some light?
Unless you have a PhD and a strong publication record you will not be considered for a Research Scientist position at Google. However, both Google Brain and FAIR are likely to have some limited number of more applied ML engineer roles to support researchers, so you may be able to get your foot in the door that way.
FAIR engineering is all about creating frameworks. Does Google allow Research Engineers to work on exploratory research projects?
Does FB have 20% projects? If so, consider doing one to help you get a paper at a top conference.
