Last week I saw handful of resumes, all 0-3YOE, with “US Citizen” written on the top. I don’t have the slightest clue why. The positions we have are open for everyone, not like we’re gonna give special treatment to anyone. Nor it requires clearance.
Because being on a work visa is an issue for many companies these days. This helps them get filtered from the lot. Smart move!
I remember a recruiter telling me to remove "US Citizen" from my resume because people can "discriminate" against me .. lol I think she was just jealous..
I've noticed individuals with names that aren't common (or, more bluntly put: Indian names) will do this mostly so that they're not unfairly discriminated against. Hiring managers may assume an individual with the name of Sundar requires a visa whereas Patrick does not.
Nice “Sir Patrick Sundaram” is my new resume name
I think most application forms have a section for visa details?
It costs a company up to 20k+ legal fees for h1b hires. Costs 0 for citizen hires. Who would you choose in these economic times?
Not even mention that the moment Indians got their card, they are gone.
I’d spend 20K without blinking if someone on H1B is the best candidate.
lol
Because they don't want to be thrown into the "probably needs a visa" pile. More important if your name sounds foreign.
Even big tech do that?
In this environment, it's harder to justify sponsorship if you just laid off X% of your workforce. Or if you need to fill a role very quickly, it's going to be much faster to hire someone who doesn't need a work visa.
I often notice that naturalized immigrants tend to do this as an attempt to differentiate themselves from other immigrants.
It seems like my assumption was right all along. This is because some (or maybe many) companies have a “visa/non-visa” criteria.
Many.
Some companies don’t want to sponsor
I think that’s always written in the job description
It’s usually never written in job description. May be 5-10 percent of posted jobs write about visa in the description. Also, regarding the questionnaire about visa, a lot of people lie about their status and open up after the offer. The resume thing is to guarantee your recruiter that you don’t need a visa because your name is foreign. Some colleges advise students with foreign names, that have green card and citizenship, to do this. You will never understand if you haven’t been in this situation.
Honestly as a hiring manager it’s not even my money so I could care less where the candidate is from. I want to hire the best candidate possible given they are in the comp band, period.
