I am a Canadian PR. I joined Meta in 2022 as an Engineering Manager(full time remote) and recently have an opportunity to move to Seattle for a new Engineering Management roll within the company. After reviewing with Meta immigration they have suggested that I am eligible for EB1C and that may lead to a very fast path to green card(they have quoted 1-1.5 yrs) However I am still a year away for qualifying for Canadian citizenship. I personally dont have a lot of connection and network in Canada(GTA area), so cant foresee the benefit of a Canadian citizenship, but a few from network advised me to prioritize Canadian citizen over US GC given current situation. A few from my network however also advised me that if I am staying in tech, US is the final destination anyway so there is no point in delaying. Overall, I tried hard to make a decision, but its confusing. Agree that this is probably a first world problem but still a problem that I am struggling with. How is Seattle for a newbie with kids. From my offer letter it seems a 10% bump on my base salary and CAD -> USD while my stock compensation is staying the same(my RSU are all in USD) Anyone has done this move and thoughts? Probably some perspective from an immigrant without a lot of ties in US or Canada can help me a little bit. Lastly, thank you all for this wonderful community. 580K CAD 13
One year's worth waiting before moving... Canada is a much better place to retire IMHO
Far more opportunities in the US, if you can get EB1C it's a no brainer. But if you want to be safe, why not do back and forth for a year so you can have your cake and eat it too?
Meta still needs layoffs more because at least 50% of employees have nothing meaningful job to do.
Cant say 50% but I think you are right about more layoffs coming. Which is probably something I should consider before relocating to US
Can you do both simultaneously?
Nope.
Then prioritizing Canada makes more sense. I can’t imagine you not getting more opportunities like the Seattle one once economy gets back on its legs.
I’d wait to get a Canadian citizenship before moving. Tbh you never know with US immigration and can’t trust an employer right now. I’d play it safe right now.
Are you in Vancouver ? How’s life in Canada in general ? Also, have you lived in US before ?
If you are born in india you should prioritize Canada citizenship first. Moving to US on an L visa, you risk going back to India in case of a job loss. There is no guarantee on the GC. Meta is having lots immigration issues in the US. Please read PERM issues in internal workplace groups. It would take 2-3 years assuming your applications gets approved. It is also possible they will reject your GC petition. It is also possible for you to be laid off, which means you will have to go back to your home country.
Do you have a Canadian PR currently?
I got it in late 2021
How will you get citizenship in 1 year if you got it in 2021? Regarding your Q are you India born? If so, it makes sense to move to US ASAP and get that GC. In any case the PR will still be valid if things don’t work out. If you aren’t India born it’s probably better to get the citizenship and then move since you can get GC under any category in ~12 months even without ICT.
What’s your Country of Birth ?? That’s key for us GC process.
Canadian passport is something for life and your kids will benefit from it. I would wait, Can I DM you ? I have some questions about meta and being EM. Thanks
What are the benefits for kids ?
US passport will get more benefits than a Canadian one for kids and everyone. And please don’t start the “free healthcare, no guns” BS.

You have a decent TC. Get a Canadian citizenship first. Then getting any US visa is straightforward.
