I am getting an opportunity with Rivian as a mechanical engineer. It's through a 3rd party. Offer: $88,000, Location: Irvine, California Current Salary: $67,000, Location: Michigan YOE: 3 years The offer seems low considering the location is California. Any advice will be appreciated.
Irvine is pricy. I lived in Oceanside on 60k out of college and it was tough.
Oceanside on 60k?! Holy. Props to you. Personally I think 88k in Irvine is okay for early career.
Contract position, pass. Why bother working for a startup if you won't get any equity?
I have been trying to move to a new company for a while now without success. I thought maybe the experience gained here will help to get someplace else.
Do not think of this as moving to a new company. As a contractor you will always be treated as 3rd class citizen
Reasonable answer, sounds like they don’t want you all that badly though.
No way. That's a crap salary and no equity in a company that should go public soon.
direct feedback is do not accept it. 1. why not try direct hire? 2. salary is extremely low.
Currently a mechanical engineer at Rivian making 120k/yr with 53k rsu 4yoe
Don’t get abused by contracting firms. Prepare little bit more and find way better opportunity. You got one offer that means you are doing good and will get more soon.
If you’re young, in your 20s, not a terrible idea to move to Cali to gain some interesting experience both from life and work. You got nothing to lose. But yes the pay is not great California standard but it also means there is a lot of upside if you work hard.
no equity and under 100k in cali? Hard pass
Which recruiting company are you with if you don’t mind me asking ? Even for Irvine TC seems less !
L&T They are saying as per my experience, this is the standard salary. I mean just my rent is gonna go up 10 - 15 k. Then possibly grocery, gas, outdoor activities will add 5k at the least. It doesn't make sense for me to make a move.
I hear you ! For what you make staying in Michigan it’s decent enough although it’s not high ! Most of these recruiting companies do so. I was initially with a recruiting company which dint give me insurance benefits or vacation for that matter and were low balling me. Even when my manager asked to bump up the pay by 8% I got peanuts ! Do you have a chance to negotiate with them and see? Also try doing some research on Irvine area and talk to them with data in hand ! Wish you all the very best !
