I am new grad. I recently received two offers which one I should accept? One is FTE and another is Contract. Both of them have benefits and drawbacks. FTE is from United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) in Pontiac, Michigan where as contract is from India based Persistent Systems (Microsoft) in Seattle. I am kind of confused as there won’t be much opportunity in Pontiac, Michigan but Seattle is very costly. Please help me decide which one to choose. #engineering #software #offer #persistentsystems #softwareengineersalary
Go for MSFT. You’ll get many opportunities based on that and temporary live within your means if its too costly. Share a room/apt and so on. Rest would be taken care automatically.
1. There is no state tax in WA. 2. Stay in Redmond - you can find apartments with lower Rent and close to the office. DM for more housing details. You can easily afford to live in Redmond but might not save much(depending on the lifestyle) should be an easy decision.
Come to Seattle - you will have more opportunities to grow here and switch companies
This makes no sene. 1. You don't need to be in Seattle or the bay area to apply to jobs there. 2. Contractors are the first to get cut, and most places have non compete/no hire policies in place. So converting to an MSFT FT might not be easy. 3. Persistent isn't known to be a great place. The wlb might be as bad if not worse compared to your other option. Usually non big tech companies have more US citizens, and you'll have different cultural experience. Although the fast pace of big tech is good to have early in career, but I digress. 3. Compared to cost or living, it might be a wash/equal. With perhaps Michigan slightly better. Now if this were the bay area, I'd say go for it. But Seattle just does not have the same get go culture as the bay and nor does it have that many opportunities that you wouldn't get by applying online.
Seattle is great - it has all big tech companies with super high TC. I came here working for peanuts and now earn top dollar.
UWM is really bad, it’s like a school
what do you mean by that? Bad wlb?
In every aspect, wlb, pay, no bonus. They track your time in and out, have to be there for 9 hours.
New lol
Go for a Full time. Contractors would be first ones to get terminated that too without severance. And especially with Microsoft, it is super risky in this market. If you are on student visa, it becomes even more riskier with OPT and stuff. That doesn't mean Full time is lay off proof but you know what I mean right. 95k in Michigan is pretty good. You can ignore other cons of UWM for couple of years and then switch for direct hire to MSFT.
