My friend has a gorgeous 70lb male dog. Working dog breed. It’s super athletic and gets plenty of exercise. How do I talk my friend out of neutering it? We don’t intend to breed it, but I am just worried the dog will get fat and lazy. Did anyone have regrets over neutering? #Dogs
Please neuter the dog, it only has benefits
It has much more downsides than benefits. Read the latest research. It's common sense hormonal balance is important to overall health.
“It only has benefits” Let’s not spread this propaganda. Neutering has benefits to society but not to the dog undergoing surgery. U don’t see humans getting neutered, do u?
It's actually very beneficial for dogs to be neutered or spayed if your not breeding them. I had a lengthy conversation with my vet about the health benefits long term for my dog and the possible behavior issues if I didn't.
Not true. In Europe it's illegal to spay for a reason. In latest studies, there are significant medical downsides to fix than not. USA vets just repeat what the industry tells them.
FYI, vets just repeat what they are told in academics. Majority don’t even follow research. Learned it the hard way raising several dogs over decades.
Intact 70lb working breed sounds like a nightmare to me but I guess your friend is also super athletic and works the dog appropriately? I don’t know how you could manage this dog with a full time job unless your friend owns a farm I’d take a lazy dog over a dog too active for me to handle any day
Support torture
The recommendation/requirement to neuter spay is completely personal. You should hire a dog trainer to assess if the dog is aggressive in any way. Cutting off hormones early on could (May be) reduce aggression. Also, keeping the dog intact is not going to automatically increase dog population as some users here posit. If you’re living in a big city with confined spaces, it is completely safe to keep intact as the chances of dog running out to “mate” are very low. This does increase drastically in suburbs if the dog is left on its own in the backyard etc. ultimately, whatever you decide, take ownership of the decision and be prepared to make adjustments from any consequence that arises. My dog is intact due to its calm demeanor and me not seeing any benefit of neutering yet.
Preventing puppies is only one reason to neuter. Reduction of risk of certain cancers and diseases is another. There are almost no downsides to neutering unless you're planning on breeding the dog.
“Almost no downsides” lol
Here’s the thing. Majority of ppl (including vets) tell you neutering is beneficial to dog. This is wrong. Any preventative intrusive surgery has more downsides than upsides. The only motivation to neutering is to prevent accidental litters. That’s it. Nothing else. Period. It’s bullshit propaganda in USA. Most of the countries don’t even think about neutering because it could cause hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately there’s not enough funding to do lifetime research on dogs. Lifespan of dogs has been dropping every decade due to cancers and heart issues. Main factor is food but there r other things in play. Some researchers hypothesize neutering (especially at young age) to be the cause. Me and plenty others (including some vet friends) have intact dogs for years. You just make sure to not take ur female dog in heat outdoors. That’s it. Or you can neuter if u have both male and female dogs at home. If u do, make sure to wait atleast until 2.5 yrs old. U don’t chop off a kids testicles because they show sexual tendencies OR to prevent testicular cancer. Dogs deserve the same respect. Source: Raised plenty of pups over decades.
Thanks for educating the sheep’s on this. Appreciate it!
Agree, but even with intact males and females in the same house it is possible for knowledgeable and dedicated owners to manage it. I have kept intact males and females for over a decade with no accidents. If owners put the dog’s health first then they will make it work.
Neutering after a certain age is safe. The dog has already gone through hormonal changes and has enough testosterone to stay fit and healthy
why don’t they nueter humans?
I do not neuter my dogs until they are seniors for health reasons. Several studies show a strong correlation between neutering and noise phobias, fear aggression, various cancers, and ccl tears. If the dog is active and working and the owner(s) are committed to not putting him in situations where he may have accidental litters then he should be left intact.
💯
Tell your friend to try neutering on themselves before imposing it on another living being.
As soon as dogs and cats start using condoms then neutering or spaying won’t be a problem. You going to help your pet get a condom on?
Have you see intact dogs running around and fucking without condoms? You are a morally inferior human being
Spay or neuter unless you are a certified trained breeder. There are too many homeless dogs and cats in the world. The shelters euthanize thousands of pets every year. We see so many dogs dumped in rescue because the dog had puppies with an “undesirable breed” or the dog has a health problem that could have been prevented with early veterinary care and the owner no longer wants to pay for the care. I have personally rescued many dogs and all lived to be very old and all were spayed or neutered.
This isn’t a good supporting argument for neutering.
OP here. This dog is in no danger of going homeless. He has at least 2 people who raised him since he was a puppy, and love him to bits and both have careers in different fields.
Did cutting your balls make you fat and lazy? I've never had a dog go lazy after they get cut. I see owners get lazy after owning a dog (I can speak from expefience) that might lead to a fat and lazy dog. Neutered dogs are safer. Don't chase PP into the street and get run over. Do it or don't get a dog.
That's a lot of projection... Did someone not touch you this decade?
