You at least get paid extra for on-calls. Also you don't get ringed at night. Unlike Microsoft, you get waked up at 2am at night for on-calls and no extra pay
Sounds terrible
WLB in SRE is better than SWE. Oncall isn't bad.
Is oncall for everyone? I thought its special SRE engineers.. is that true?
It depends on the product life stage. For your product to get full SRE support it needs to be able to comply with a bunch of requirements, so new products are mostly managed by the SWE teams themselves. Also not every oncall rotation is about services running in production, like build cops, release, internal tools, etc, which also are not SRE responsibility.
SREs always have rotations in two locations, which means your shifts are 12h max, not 24h as there will be another SRE on the other side of the globe sharing the rotation will you. Additionally, they can opt to get extra days off instead of money as oncall compensation (SREs are the only ones who can do that). My SRE friends are always traveling on vacations because of that and I've never seen they complaining about their WLB. On the contrary.
I have an SRE leadership interview lined up at Google any advice re the Googleness interview?
How was it ?
How was it? Can you share your experience? I have loop lined up
