In Big Tech, there is never such a team that is at core and without it the company won't survive. High chances that you are doing ops in such team or you are cog in machine not doing anything cool unless you are top 5% in that team. I have worked in core teams in AWS, Google and each time I was disappointed. Joined teams like DynamoDB/Spanner which before ML was like super core to services. I did just ops!
This 100 percent. You’re always replaceable and the work to be done is always optimization, refactoring, automating some obscure workflow, changing some configs, etc… Big corp gonna big corp, just the nature of the business.

The title is being really undervalued in this thread. Chasing promotions is extremely tedious and lengthy in my experience and I would take the higher level+TC over chasing the latest trend in tech.
