We are struggling to get salaries more than 120k here in Illinois, not sure how ppl are making 400k plus sign on and benefits??? Why is this much difference in salaries between states?? š¤
Equity. Iām sure if you worked at Amazon in Illnois youād probably be making at least 200k+ with a couple years of xp?
No matter what technology you are working on, even if you work on latest DevOps you will not get much and on top of that HR will consider current salary and starts negotiating with the person not revealing what exactly they can pay for the position āŗļø
Housing is cheap in Illinois thatās why salaries are lower.
I lived in Illinois. Best decision of my life has been to leave. Waaaay better jobs in SF and NYC my dude
Cost of living
Op in they bay area you don't even get a dump house in prime location for $1m. How does that sound to you? Also you pay 42%+ in tax overall.
Yeah housing is probably 4x in Bay Area compared to mice Chicago suburbs. If you spent $800k in Chicago and $3 mil (yes!) for similar house in San Jose. The difference is $40k vs $150k just in 5% interest on mortgage, no principle. So $100k difference is sufficient to make up for housing cost. The rest is the difference between a hot company vs a not so hot company.
You donāt get paid shit in Chicago, thatās why I left.
My situation was same as you before I joined Microsoft recently. Not that I am making crazy money now but still way better than previous job.
Yes and milk here is $4.59 a gallon and your kids rec soccer is $755 to sign up. Rent? $4k per month in any decent public district
Don't measure salaries in dollars. My TC = $375k = 160 sq ft of take-home house per year. $120k in Illinois = 500 sq ft per year. Salaries in Illinois are 3x. California money doesn't go far. Teamblind, Illinois edition : TSqFt or GTFO.
