How was your comp change this year, if any? Were comp bands heavily adjusted? I also heard from a recruiter that riot would be offering equity to its employees. Anyone have details on that? #gaming #riot #riotgames
Re: Comp people are given a mix of COLA and adjustments. I’f promoted than people jump into new bands. If you are asking if there are general sweeping ones? I’d say nothing too out of the ordinary. Riot pays well for game industry but doesn’t pay as well as FAANG. Re: RCTV77 comment in their interview- I’m not surprised. Things were pretty rough and not always respectful when it came to interviewing. That’s had a major overhaul in recent years and now everyone sticks to core interview scripts for consistency and fairness. Not much tolerance for off the cuff ad hoc interviews anymore. We had our share of douche nozzles, many have been smited, left or have had to evolve. Lots of training and low tolerance for bad behavior. We’re not perfect by any means, but there has been major reflection and strides towards evolution. Re: Verizon. It’s time for the industry to evolve. A lot of bad Behaviour is being rightfully outed and put in the spotlight. As a field of entertainment, there is always going to be people passionate about making things that delight people the same way movies and tv do. I think we game makers love the act of collaboration and the many disciplines that need to come together to make something players enjoy. That said, we don’t get paid as well as we should and I think companies are recognizing that as their is talent drain and stiff competition across the industry. In general the live service games, mobile and engine companies tend to be more stable since they aren’t so driven by the box product market whims. I love making games. Looking forward to seeing the industry continue to evolve. It has too.
Thanks for your response! I've been offered roles at riot a few times throughout my career and the compensation packages have varied. I know Riot pays well compared to much of the industry, but EA treats me pretty well. Would love to make the switch but definitely have the golden handcuffs right now.
Curiously, with all that "evolution", AAA games from those "reformed studios" (specially the ones that love to virtue signal) are bankrupt in terms of creativity and respect for their clients. You guys have all the wrong priorities. I wont touch a single game from companies that virtue signal.
@respawn- And yes there is equity for those in higher level roles.
Epic games offers equity 😉😉
How do you sell it

What’s the TC like for a senior engineer at these companies?
Generally 160-200k base
And there are bonuses. Short term bonus is 15% of your base multiplied by personal and company performance weight, which varies but can roughly think as 1.4. Long term is similar but will be granted in 3 years. If the base is 180k, then you probably will receive ~230k to ~250k depends on how long you’ve been in the company.
Wats ur current tc
TC 150k, non tech.
All employees get an initial equity grant (double vesting). If you are Director+ you get a new grant (single vest) annually in Leui of a 3 year vesting cash bonus that all employees get every year (roughly 20% of your salary, that gets a performance multiplier up to 3x at 3 year mark). Raises this year on average were 7%, unless you got promoted as well. On top of that, we also got our yearly bonus of about 25% of your base pay on average. I was happy with my bonus and raise personally.
Epic seems to be offering really high salaries lately. How do they compare to riot?
What are salaries at Epic? And what is TC?
Also curious
Only 7%, and there is a salary cap for each level. If you close to that cap, will only get 7% bonus. Not happy because the inflation is already 7.5%, and market value increased by 20% - 30% this year, lots of companies offered extra for employees Bonus is OK, about 1.7X of the target. Equality grant (20% of salary unless director or above) is not good since the vesting is 0 30 40 40, worse than Amazon can you belive?
I can believe it. Amazon makes more money than Riot.
“Only 7%” My wife got a 4%, many companies didn’t even adjust their COLA… “Bonus is OK, about 1.7X of the target.” How many companies do you know offers 1.7x bonus multipliers, Or have comparative RSUs that increased 70% in a year?? About equity grant; Riot’s current batch of RSUs are offered as something extra, as a good will, as a gift, wasn’t in our offer letter. Riot absolutely didn’t have to do that. At this point this is choosing beggar level complaining… Rioters are indeed some of the most spoiled bunch I have ever seen :)
@Respawn, I’m a bit lost. We hire regularly folks from EA, Riot beats EA’s comp very easily, if you take into account the historical bonus multipliers Riot gives. I actually just talked with Respawn, I had to pull out from interview, they couldn’t match Riot’s comp. I think the biggest problem is, our comp model is very hard to explain to new comers and looks bad on paper without taking in to account the multipliers. Can you share some numbers, YoE and title? I can give visibility if we can beat or not.
Sure. TC is 150, production. 5 YOE. We have an additional annual bonus incoming and I'm not sure what the exact breakdown is, as it's newish. Last year it was about 12k in stocks, but I've been told that was a prorated number for me as I had been with the company for 6 months. For reference, I posted this several days ago, before I got an offer from Riot, which came in at about 150k TC.
My bonus was 2x target last year and will likely be around 2.1x target this year.

Why I Find Free Palestine Inspiring
Who are all the people that want to work for the games studios after all the shit that is being going on there? Blizzard and etc` ... The pay is much lower, why? Why should a sane person work there?
@verizon - it's me, person who wants to work in games. As a woman, I've worked at many big AAA studios and have experienced varying levels of harassment at each, although notably not really any more than my counterparts in tech. These games companies are large and the egregious stories we hear about them don't accurately portray the entire company. I like working in games. Maybe I won't like it forever, and maybe I'll make the switch to tech for higher pay, but right now this scratches a creative itch for me. No need to disparage an entire contingent of people who like making games.
