Salary range from a recruiter

So I'm talking to a recruiter for a role. They asked what my desired salary range was and I told them 100-120. They then told me the range was more 70-90, and then she said, well, 70-80, and then said "well, more like 70-75" and made some vague comments about the other forms of compensation. This seems really low for what they're looking for. Are they just trying to low-ball me, should I proceed and keep asking for my desired salary, or should I just tell them thanks but no thanks?

There's no way you're going to be able to negotiate that big a jump. If 75 (best case, 80) is too low for you, walk away now.

Recruiter is vague and low balling. Unless it's a role you really want or a TC jump, I'd just decline.

75 to 100 is a 33% jump and I don't think your recruiter that long of a bridge!

Walk. It’s that simple. They wouldn’t be low balling you at this stage. This may very well be the range approved for the role and if it isn’t what you’re looking for than don’t proceed.

The only reasonable thing I could think of is this role is somewhere else where the salaries and cost of living are lower (e.g. someone is offering you a job in Springfield IL or something where that goes really far). Unless that's the case, bail. I have tried to negotiate from a lowball offer to a market ave offer and would bet it isn't worth your time. Worked places like this before.... you probably don't want to do it! If they don't see you as worth average for the area/role, you can bet they don't value their people or think they are doing you a favor letting you work for them.

No, it's in Oakland, at Pandora. I'm scheduled to do another short phone interview, I'll ask again to confirm I guess. What a shame. People with the experience they want are going to be a bit rare (unfortunately for me, so are jobs in that category)

What role is this for? My base salary is competitive among other Bay Area tech companies, but stock is a bit lower. You probably have room for negotiation if you remain firm.

It's for community manager- building a forum up from scratch, managing moderators, that kind of thing
