The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
I'm interested to learn more about sales engineer role. How much travel do you do? What's the day to day like? Comp? Good and bad? #tech #salesengineer #sales I'm a software engineering manager right now with 10+ years of industry experience.
Love Sales Engineering. Before Covid, I traveled 75% of the time. Now, hardly anyone wants to go into the office for a meeting with a vendor. However, I also now work with engineering teams who are hybrid or remote. Comp is great when you’re exceeding quota and decent when not. Every company has a different compensation plan and accelerators, do your homework and think about how that would incentivize your work. It can be lucrative if you’re good at the role, incentives are aligned, and accelerators are reachable. Everywhere I’ve been an SE, the role has been different, but I get to make it my own and own my accounts; it can be very rewarding and fulfilling if you’re good at it.
Are you still in SE? What's your travel % now? What's the comp range otherwise?
Still an SE, travel is closer to 5%. Conferences and company events mainly. I wish it were more, but my current customer base just doesn’t meet in person often. Base 210k, OTE 300k, TC 400k
It’s a great gig. I had a ton of fun in my SE time traveling and going to all kinds of fancy dinners and events. After 6 or 7 years though I got burnt out on the travel and some of the sales sleez, and also being the key player while making the sales people rich. Moved into Product Management for a change of pace and enjoy it. Probably would have moved into a full sales role, but didn’t want to deal with the travel required for that role. Most SE pay tops out around 300-330k TC, but can exceed that with going over quota.
Travel is actually one of the things I'm looking forward to! Thank you!
Yeah the travel was great before I had two kids. Became rougher after that. You should be able to travel as much as you want. Most companies would love for you to be traveling every day visiting customers and partners.
