I'm a New Grad in San Jose who joined Qualcomm Modem team a while back. My H1B got picked and also as offices reopen, I have to move to San Diego soon. I'm really comfortable in San Jose but San Diego seems a better place on paper. Should I move to San Diego or request a tranfer to San Jose? #returntooffice #on-site #hybrid
SD x 100
If you think Qualcomm is where you want to be long term, move to SD. Itâs a much more interesting city than San Jose. In San Jose, youâll find yourself wanting to go all the way up to SF regularly for a social life, if single. That said, the job market is much better in SJ vs SD. Youâll have much more career mobility in SJ if you think youâll change companies.
Makes sense. I'll be here long term I guess, people are really happy at Q. Also, I'm an Indian dude and recently single. So maybe SD is better that way?
I moved from San Jose to SD, never going back to SJ.

I'd move to SD but be prepared to move up to SJ or somewhere else in a couple years for your 2nd job and a big raise if you aren't too tied to SD at that point
I heard tech is growing in SD similar to Austin.
Not a knock against SD or Austin - but generally beware of terms like "growing". By definition, SF/SJ will never grow. They are already kings. Also by definition, everywhere else is "growing," at what rate or in what specific way, these are all going to be exaggerated and exploited by marketing teams. Yes, even municipalities have marketing teams that try to bring in more tourism and tax revenue.
Lol this is too easy, San Diego anyday. Stay away from Man Jose.

San Diego any day
In terms of livability, things to do, and happiness, I'd say it's definitely San Diego, spoken as a Bay Area native. San Jose (and the Bay Area in general) will have a more diverse range of job opportunities available, if that is something important to you maybe San Jose is the way to go.
San Diego is way better in every regard. It's not even close.
If you have an option, consider Austin instead of SD as job opportunities are limited. It is very difficult to find a suitable opportunity for your spouse (in future). Since your question is between SD and SJ, itâs better to stay at SJ. SD is good for short term but for longer term I wonât suggest SD. You will be paid atleast 10-15% lesser than Bay Area. In Bay Area QC pays competitively as there is risk of attrition. If your entire team is in SD, then it is better to shift to SD and have a good rapport with your team and then move out of SD after few years.

San Diego is a really amazing city. If it's better for your career, which it sounds like it is at this point, then I would move there in a heartbeat.
So are you saying it's better to be in headquarters?
Junior people absolutely need to be in headquarters for faster career development. HQ offers more mentoring, and it's where all the fun projects are. BTW, I have looked at the recruiting guidelines for several big tech firms, and they all say that a candidate in a remote/satellite office should be considered less experienced than an equivalent candidate from HQ.
