Planning to learn something new and came across scala specialization on Coursera. Is scala worth spending time? Does it help learning its concepts even if you don’t use Scala in your daily job?
Learn Assembly. They're writing a new iOS frame work using Assembly
Programmed in scala for 2 years. I’ve to say that it’s an amazing language. But I prefer Java for future projects of similar nature. Scala is just too cryptic and not worth the trouble. There are N ways to do the same thing. Java has caught up to many, if not all, the scala features.
That depends. There’s good uses for it but it’s also pretty easy to write horrible code, the flexibility of the language is a double edged sword
When you learn Scala initially, you will code Scala like Java with a few language features like high order functions, pattern matching, and implicit parameters. After you work on a couple small projects, you start to think about programs a little differently. You start thinking in a higher abstractions. Then you start thinking a lot about getting Types right. It's an amazing experience and I think all engineers should learn a functional language. Scala is much better to learn for Java or C# programmers than Haskell. I highly recommend try learning Scala. If you want to build a lightweight web service, take a look at the play framework. If you want to do something with graphQL, look into sangria. Shapeless is also a good project that messes with your head because the project literally extends the language to its utmost potential. I personally have been using Scala for the past couple years because i initially wanted to look into Kafka source code. Since then, I fell in love with the language.
