Joining Amazon in a few weeks and moving to Seattle. What are some good tips for the commute? Favor public transportation over driving? I'm coming from LA.
Take the bus, do not drive
The buses in Seattle are surprisingly good (not perfect, of course). Live near a bus line and it's π
Three options: 1) walking distance to south lake union 2) easy bus commute 3) live near light rail station / street car pickup Options 1 and 3 don't come as cheap as #2 (also factoring in you won't want to live at any light rail station south of pioneer square)
Dude, commute depends on where you live.
I have lived all over. Downtown, Greenlake, North seattle, west Seattle, South Seattle, bellevue, issaquah.... but my favorite commute by far is the farthest away. Snoqualmie is 26 miles... I work 6 to 3ish... 35 min commute. And you don't have to compromise with crummy community/living space
Does Amazon has shuttle service from snoqualmie ? I will be joining Amazon in a month and will have to commute from snoqualmie
Yes, sort of. You can drive to the Issaquah Highlands park and ride and take the Amazon Ride. I think it's under 5 miles and is an express route to Doppler or SLU. Wifi enabled also. https://mymv.mvtransit.com/#/dashboard/
Uber is a good option if you can get the pass. I used to pay 99 cents for every ride from University to Amazon Doppler.
If you want suburban life the Sounder rail works well. My trip to the boonies is 30 min from International district. Busses are OK but your in the same traffic mess as everyone else.
Amazon has Office commuter shuttle from some locations.
I would say downtown if you can afford it. Or else if you prefer far from city stay close to lync stations as it would be difficult to commute or walk during cold or rainy weather. Driving in downtown would be pain in weekdays due to traffic
Depends on how you drive, Seattle drivers are incredibly passive
Where are you gonna live? If you haven't found a place yet I would recommend finding an apartment outside of downtown/belltown/SLU, but in the city proper and near a bus or light rail. Driving into downtown during the week sucks.
