I have not ridden bicycle for 15 years now. Even as a kid they were more of leisure rides in neighboorhood. I am 37 and want to do STP now. I am sure it is doable. But how should i go about it? Any tips and recommendation?
Doable as you have 6 months. But you have to seriously train for the next 6 months. Doing 100 miles on 2 consecutive days isn’t trivial.
You can follow some only 100 miler or 200 miler training programs. Best is to join a group of like minded folks who are doing it. This is a leisure ride to be enjoyed with friends.
You can do it! Do it!
Just start putting in hours on a bike. There are two likely failure points: 1) You just don't like doing long bike rides. Solution: 🤷♂️ 2) you get injured from ramping up volume too fast. Solution: find a reputable shop to help you find shoes and saddle that work well FOR YOU. Then get a professional bike fit. Those things significantly reduce the risk of little injuries that will derail training. Then just gradually ramp up your distance. Eat well and budget an extra hour of sleep the night after big rides.
Recommend doing with friends, or joining group rides such as on Cascade.org. probably a cycling msft dl to find partners too. 6 month is plenty of time to be in fine shape for this, especially for 2 day. Make sure you do some longer rides beforehand, eg lake Washington loop, to get used. If it makes sense cycle to work for convenient training. Also consider RSVP, to Vancouver. And don't cheap out on bike shorts
Seattle to Portland is cool. I know someone doing Seattle to San Diego this year, haha. Nuts. And I think he wants to do one from Vancouver next.
RSVP is tougher than STP (STP is flatter). Put hours in the bike so you can get used to the saddle. A good bike fitting is highly recommended. In case you are overweight, loosing weight helps a lot. And also, since the weather around here until the summer is unpredictable, consider purchasing a bike trainer and using a training app (I would start with Zwift, which can be recreational and evolve into more serious training).
Doable, start with easy and short rides, slowly increase miles and hills. Lake Washington is a nice loop. 4 weeks before STP there is flying wheels. It’s a check whether you are ready for STP. If you can do 60-70 miles in flying wheels then you are ready for 2 day STP.
If you can do 100 miles in flying wheels then you can do 1 day STP
What's STP? May I join u?
Title says it all. Seattle To Portland. You are welcome to join, but I am guessing u must be in Los Gatos, and it won’t make sense for u to do STP.
I would be happy to join. But it's winter and biking in the rain with low visibility is not fun. Plus, it's going to snow as well. The recommendation is to do it in summer.
