Got an offer that allows me the option to relocate to either SF or Seattle at the same salary. I know I'll save money in Seattle but after living in Vancouver for 2 years, the rain in this region makes me miserable in the winter months. Also looking for a more exciting city. I'm a single male, mid-20s. #seattle #sanfrancisco Edit - Old TC: 175k CAD - SDE II at Amazon, New TC: SDE II, fintech company, no exact figures yet but I'm assuming 250k-300k USD based on levels.fyi, no friends in either city lol
Bellevue Wa if you like outdoors, snowboarding and water
Bay area has best in class hikes and driving roads, and Tahoe is a few hours away for snowboarding.
Bay Area doesn’t compare with ski areas in Seattle. By the time you reach Tahoe, people can reach whistler. But Seattle has 3 resorts in 1-2 hours drive. Add 3 more with another hour of driving.
Winter is awesome! I love Vancouver weather all year round. Your post is written in a way that reveals your bias, so naturally, the responses you receive will likely lean towards San Francisco, since it seems you're already inclined to choose it.
Neither SF or Seattle is great for 20-something at this point. SF is worth it for the career trade-off, but you will be on planes to Sea a lot depending on your role. Seattle will be better on budget, but weather is ass.
Just be aware the dating scene sucks in SF if you're a straight dude. Not many women out here, and even fewer that are fun. Maybe it's better in your 20's vs. 30's though.
If you didn’t like the Vancouver. Seattle will be the same. However I don’t know why would anyone wants to live in crime ridden SF.
If you don’t like the weather in Vancouver, then SF is better. I’ve lived in both. SF is not that bad. People are obsessed with work, yes dating scene sucks (straight man). Just live in a good neighborhood in Sf and you’ll be fine. I lived in the marina and loved it (not Indian lol )
What fintech companies are in seattle?
Moved from SF to Seattle, rain doesn't happen as much as people think but I guess if Vancouver is the same (is it?) and you hate Vancouver then do SF. More rain but not the bad, saves$50,000 in taxes. I still don't think it's worth the 10% income tax to buy less rain. I wonder if you could work around the rain differently, buy a happy lamp to increase mood in darker day, get a nice indoor happy like shooting, archery or climbing to cope with wet days, etc. I would say you're not doing Seattle correctly if you don't take advantage of the non rain benefits we have. I find the outdoors way better than SF.
