I am a staff swe owning a critical piece with 9 yoe (6+ at Amazon). I see a ceiling at SWE as there aren't many promotions left after staff and principal engineer in some companies. Work also can become a bit boring as you are basically doing similar work everywhere when you get high. I have started to think about changing my path to SDM, solutions architect, sales engineer, or join the consulting and have different clients from time to time. I find myself enjoying building architecture and designs, teaching others, and talking to people more than coding nowadays though I am worried I'll lower my comp switching to non SWE roles. Also worried if I switch to SDM or SA not not like it, getting SWE opportunities will be difficult (is it really a one way door)? Any suggestions from people with the career paths described above? What would you recommend for best TC, WLB, working remote, interesting projects, and benefits / perks (i.e. free food, travel business class?) How does solution architect differ from an SWE? Don’t you pretty much do the same thing except for coding.
I’ve helped a number of people transition into different kinds of roles. To avoid the one way door aspect, we’ve often found some way for the person to try the new role before fully transitioning. If the person wants to try managing (and seems like they could have the temperament and aptitude) that often looks like giving them a few directs to see if they like managing and if they’re ramping in that new role well before giving them a full team and changing their job function. If they decide it’s not a fit, it’s easier to revert. Or if it’s a different function (like product or something), try taking on that function for a new and not mission critical project partnering with someone who has expertise in the role for guidance. So I’d see if there’s an opportunity for you to try some of these new things and see what works for you.
