Has anyone ever heard of or known a self taught quant trader? I would imagine this is rather uncommon since usually hedge funds/trading firms are looking for someone with a masters/phd in physics/math/finance. What was their path?
Quantitative investing as in “the price of corn will go up because this weather pattern” crap, or scalping a few points at a time on the S&P? I can scalp the S&P decently
If you’re doing well with scalping why are you still keeping your day job? Honest question
There’s a big difference between earning a little extra spending cash each month and having to make money to pay your mortgage. It’s a lot more pressure. Also, the market is ripping right now. There’s no guarantee that it’ll keep working. But yeah, the earning potential is definitely higher from trading if you can make it work
Some people build their own systems in their basements that trade some simple strategy. They definitely know some things. But it’s a different league than learning from people who’ve been doing it successfully for decades.
Definitely - that makes sense.. but I guess my question moreso is… have you ever come across a self taught quant trader that is working as a quant trader for a notable quant trading firm (like HRT) that doesn’t have a traditional background (stats/financial engineering/math masters/phd)
Nope
