Paywalled, unfortunately. Stack ranking is nothing more than a cheap way for companies to weaponize tech workers against each other and prevent them from working honest hours. You get a culture decline for the sake of efficiency, where cutthroat politics and constant impact searching is prioritized over teamwork and collaboration. It’s the hallmark of a terrible company for workers—Amazon and Meta succeed in spite of this system, and there’s no hard evidence that it improves outcomes for tech workers or even on the stock prices—unlike layoffs.
