Speaking for a friend on this one. The CEO pays Canadians shit and micromanages employees on Slack (imagine a CEO shitting on individual engineers on Slack... That is reality of Shopify). During company all hands whenever he is called out for Shopify having 1/2 the compensation of Amazon or other competitors he says that he doesn't want "money motivated" people to join. So I hope you all get the message. If you want to work passionately for peanuts join Shopify.
How’s the pay for california employees though?
Low. Cant even crack 300k for L5
WTF that is not low and thats like more than double what my friend makes as L6 in Canada after exchange rate. I don't know what compensation is in California but that seems way too high.
They do seem to have a good culture though. Obviously that cannot be quantified, but I've talked to a few people who like it there also glassdoor reviews / pulse review corroborate with this
They are only one of big tech companies out of Canada. Reviews are of employees who would have worked at shittier Canadian org or straight out of college.
That makes sense and probably Canadians have a better work life balance in general maybe
Any company that claims to “take care of our people” but pays them half of market rate is a bullsh*t company. Shopify is only one of them
Sad, I had pinged my only connection on LinkedIn to explore opportunities at Shopify a while ago, did not hear back. Perhaps they themselves are not too excited about Shopify :)
What you said is so true. In Canada their L5 is $140k you get $60k in investments by end of year.
CAD $ ?
L5s range from new grads to mid-level. I know of L5 new grads in the US making $155k USD. They joined right after their internship with us. 🤷♂️
Who would work for Shopify for the “mission” lol
LOL, I had no idea they even had a mission! If I want to work for a mission, there's always the OSS and also the church!
I like what shopify is doing. Particularly the impact they have had on small businesses allowing them to reach new customers. But I also like to support my family. I won't take a pay cut to work for them. It's not being "motivated by money". It's economics. I can get paid significantly more elsewhere. Why would i take a massive pay cut?
Most companies which treat their employees badly only do well in the short term. Long term their employees will ensure they’re screwed and nailed to the wall.
How about he start with himself first? He is a billionaire and if he doesn’t care about money he can donate it to the company mission
He takes no salary/bonuses. His net worth is mostly made up of Shopify stock. By holding, he’s showing his commitment to the company. He’s also donating a ton of money to fight climate change
I can’t give him kudos for not drawing a salary. They reality is most people here are no where near the financial position he is in. As CEO, it’s high risk, high reward. This is Tobi’s company, not yours nor mine. He is fully out of touch if he expects people to have the same level of zeal and dedication (and I say that knowing many people here feel strongly driven by the mission) as he does, so much so that they’d work for a salary that isn’t competitive. As a literal billionaire it’s very rich (no pun intended) of him to frame people placing an importance on salary as somehow beneath Shopify or not representative of the kind of people who could work here. Make it make sense.
This is bullshit in many levels. 1. You can always find a company which pays more than yours. 2. I haven't noticed such story from inside in my tenure 3. If you think pay is low you shouldn't join. Simple. 4. Posting this message from one feedback is not fair.
They’re not Amazon and can’t compete on salary. It’s too bad but looks like that’s the reality.
