I'm seeing layoffs everywhere in tech yet not a hint of it at Shopify. Asking the more senior Shopify employees/ Blind community at large, any info on the questions below? Why is Shopify still hiring agressively? Is there a freeze on the horizon? Shopify didn't have significant layoffs in Apr 2020 when most other companies did, would it be safe to assume there won't be any this time too? If layoffs do happen, which areas would you expect them to be? Poll below
Seems unlikely tbh, their balance sheet is honestly quite impressive for their size, no debt, tons of cash. They can take advantage of the current situation and grow through the situation, slim down their cash pile and come out super strong. Most other tech companies are debt heavy somehow..:/
This is purely from a finance perspective. Might be they still lay people off for other reasons but really they don’t have a good point
Man, Don't kill me twice.

They arent announcing layoffs but they have been silently letting go people last few weeks in small waves. My estimate is at least few hundred people. I am one of the people they let go.
Sorry to hear... can I DM you?
Really ? My sources told me there’s a huge talent drain anyway because most people are severely under water with their stock based compensation and they just don’t refill these posts within the teams they want to close down. Got any proof of whole teams being let go or just individuals getting PIPd?
I got a verbal offer and accepted. They have not sent me a written offer yet, recruiter told me something was wrong with their system, it has supposedly been resolved but now they are working through the backlog. Anybody have a similar experience?
It’s everyone. They are rolling out the new comp system and don’t have the balls to tell candidates it will take until July. You’ll literally receive your written offer in the first week of July, until then they will just meander about and not say anything. Don’t worry, it sucks ass though.
@zhHI65 so the rollout will only be completed in early July? I was told that they would provide me with an update sometime in the coming week, guessing there wont be updates on the written offer
@HtDL61 i am in the same situation. Wasnt told it was resolved yet but have been told ill “get an update” in a week. Had a verbal offer over 2 weeks ago
Has anyone heard any concrete dates or details regarding written offers for new candidates?
I'm still waiting for mine for more than 3 weeks now.
I am still waiting for mine as well, been waiting for 3 weeks now
Yep Feedback again after team match “we will send the paperwork as soon as possible, don’t worry you will definitely be hired” lol
From What I have heard today
They are starting to cut people right before the new compy roll out. Leads are forced to find petty reasons and you can tell they hate their jobs telling people with families they are being let go because they didn't put enough into the culture or career progression, yet they told everyone no one can move internally.
Is there a quota for these cuts?
The worst part is that they arent even announcing mass layoffs to the market to avoid paying severance. They are getting away with paying just a week's wage which is statutory requirement in Canada. I estimate few hundred people let go in last 4 weeks. I personally know 6 people from my vertical (total ~100 people) who are let go without a pip, and they didnt even disclose if performance is the reason.
We know as much as you.
