Got a verbal offer for a senior designer in marketing UX from Shopify. (I'm not sure about the level. No level numbers were mentioned.) It seems low for the tech industry where I am. I have local friends in the industry in comparable senior designer roles at similarly-sized companies who are making 20–30% more than the figure in my verbal offer. I've also spoken to recruiters at a couple of similarly-sized tech companies in the financial space about other senior designer roles, and both had salary ranges that started at $30–35k more. The other odd thing is that I went through the entire interview process at a staff designer/IC level, but the offer was one level below that. They said they want to help me develop into the original role. Is this typical? Do I have any room to negotiate here or is this just how Shopify works? Are they sincere about development/advancement or will I be waiting for years to move up a level? 11 YoE, but no previous experience in big tech
What’s the offer
Salary: $110k CAD Equity: $50k USD/year over the next 3 years ($150k in total)
That’s really low, but not surprised since Shopify underpays.
Sounds like you were down-leveled. I’d be realistic and understand that it’ll take a couple years to progress to Staff (at best). I’d only sign on if you’re comfortable with the current terms. I also was down leveled and it’s been somewhat of an uphill battle to get promo. Ironically, it was easier for me to just get a promo from a larger company. Which to me, speaks to the recognition of my value. Go where you’re valued.
You must be on the very low end of their pay band. I'm in marketing UX at Shopify making 140 base 150 equity
That’s right around what the people I know in similar positions are making. Do you know if they’ll be willing to offer that if I ask?
I don't think so tbh, they wouldn't counter with me and if you've already gotten a verbal offer then that's pretty set in stone. What salary range did you say you wanted when they asked you in the initial call?
pay is peanuts, where are you located?
