https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/i-got-this-wrong-shopify-ceo-announces-plan-to-layoff-10-per-cent-of-staff-1.6002383 "Ultimately, placing this bet was my call to make and I got this wrong. Now, we have to adjust," said Lutke. Ceo makes the bet, common employee pay the price. Fuck it
The CEO should be forced to scrub every toilet in the company on his knees with his personal toothbrush.
And then use same toothbrush until Dec 2022🫠
Shopify is fully remote so there's no toilets to scrub.
Employees mess up, we got fired. CEO gets to lay off people for their miscalculation and prediction of demand. Unlike the CEO, we are people with family reasonability. This pay is important. His billion loss is not going to make him homeless.
What do you think should change? And more importantly, how do you think it can be changed?
FTE is a commitment. You should not make a big bet against a commitment these folks have for their family. This strategy of growth at all costs leading them to making so many bold moves. Maybe if you need a spike in workforce, just hire contractors or temp workers. Anyway I don't know what a good solution is. Just feel sad that these CEO's making big bets and it's impacting a lot of other people's lives. Yet those are the ones who got laid off. The CEO rarely does get fired.
Heads I win, tails you lose. The problem has been there for a while but now being exacerbated by the layoff news. Gap between common worker and exec level pay gap has widened so much over the last decades it is ridiculous (even in tech where the pay is generally high). the employee always gets screwed over when things go bad and gets to reap little or none benefits when company does well.
Guess it's time to become an exec
At least he was man enough to admit it. Facebook dude is blaming everyone but himself.
But Meta didn't layoff anyone
Lol. Zuck somehow went into a townhall meeting just knowing that there was a significant amount of underperforming folks without even seeing any data. The reviews weren't even submitted until weeks after that call. Not only is he wealthy, but the guy is also a prophet.
This sucks for people at Shopify but the fact he used the phrase “I got this wrong” and took responsibility for the strategic decisions that led here are what a real leader does. Now, I won’t give too much credit without knowing if he evaluated his own comp or those at the top in addition to laying off rank and file employees but it’s still more than most CEOs would do. Typically that playbook is blame economic headwinds/bad luck/etc and anything other than themselves.
Coinmart CEO Brian Armstrong did the same.
Shittiest company i had to deal with, probably all comes from ceo. Now yhey seem yo move in right direction

Doesn’t come at a surprise…
anybody know if eng affected?
How can eng NOT be affected by a 10% layoff? Also: Shopify: We're planning to DOUBLE our engineering team in 2021 by hiring 2,021 new roles https://twitter.com/shopifyeng/status/1333908994465927168?lang=en https://techcouver.com/2021/01/06/shopify-to-double-engineering-team/

😂
Shopify is only worth as a toilet safe offer
Good riddance, they wasted so much of my time and then decided to reject me based on their talk about myself interview. I’m not interested in interviewing with a company that decides it’s appropriate to reject a senior technical candidate because some recruiter with 2 YOE decided she didn’t like my back story. What a presumptuous company
Lol holding a grudge because you failed a behavioral interview? Just move on and ignore it. You can get unlucky on any interview at any company
You sound toxic they dodged a bullet there.
