Ive worked at Nordstrom for about 10 years, but only in technical program management for a year and a half. I was a project manager for 2 years before that. I started as a cashier at the store and worked my way up. I’m not a senior, but I should be based on how Nordstrom classifies TPMS. I think I get stuck with this perception that I’m just dying to help out because I’ve only ever worked at Nordstrom. I was recently promoted, and they gave me a huge raise to keep me. From 95k to 125k. But they don’t think I’m ready to be a senior still. AWS offered me a sr TPM role, 250 TC. It’s apparent Amazon is toxic. But I think it’s an important move I need for my career to show breadth on my resume. Nordstrom has been good to me, it’s a great company and they’re doing really interesting things now so I’m a little torn. Wlb is great, benefits are ok, bonus structure sucks, and their 401k is pretty good. I am bored though, not really being challenged. Should I take this offer?
Yea
Amazon is great on your resume, but it would be brutal work wise. I would take the offer if I wanted to apply to other faang roles, and wanted to use the Amazon brand.
It's only brutal if you're under a bad manager. Don't know why so many masochists work here pulling 60+ hrs regularly. I never worked more 40 hrs a week last three yrs.
Use amazon, challenge yourself, learn some great stuff and then move on. Consider it as a bridge
I agree. I have no clue why there is so much negativity around Amazon. It is a great place to learn and do cool things. And looks great on your resume. And yes you can define how much you want to work. No one works 70 hours a week forever. Yes there are times when you have to put extra hours but not forever. Yes Amazon perks are not the best but you know it before applying.
welcome to the jungle and congrats on the TC. I wish you good fortune in the wars to come
Entirely depends on your manager and org. Bored Vs toxic - pick your poison If you want to play safe, Ask for a match and stay at Nordstrom You’ll be surprised to learn they have better benefits than amazon. You are not PIP proof as a TPM or any job function for that matter , below L7/8 level
lol there's nothing pip proof about L7 or L8 or even L10 except that L8+ doesn't even go through the regular perf mgmt process and just get fired directly
Absolutely take it. Be prepared to work hard for a couple years and then switch to better places like MS or Google
Because of the TC bump, it makes sense to take it. But, don’t assume your life will be any better or same as that in Nordstrom, get in, survive for a year and start preparing to move.
Nordstrom countered 180k, sr tpm, 25% bonus I do not know what to do
Amazon
Nordstrom is not even a tech company
Yes. Also, poll.
