It's a job at the Walmart Connect AdTech team in Sunnyvale, California (X3) . This is the best opportunity I've been offered so far but I also have the option to stay at my current company. TC is 180k + 15k relocation and 15k sign on. Onsite 5 days a week. I'm early career right now and my main priority is maximizing my long term career growth. Is it worth it? Current Job: 143k TC in Arlington, Va Hybrid (General Dynamics)
Walmart’s tech team is pretty well-respected in the industry. It could be a good move for career growth. Where do you work now?
General Dynamics Information Technology
Gov/defense consulting? Yeah if you want to maximize TC I would make the jump. Gov/defense has other perks like stability and job security…it should be much more recession proof. So it’s up to you. If it were me I would jump to Walmart though. Congrats on the offer!
your home take will decrease by moving to bay area
And quality of life, 5 days a week sounds brutal lol
Also defense companies are safer in this env. Maybe switch when the market is better.
5 days on-site means you either have to live nearby your office which could be way more expansive than VA, or live far away to keep the same rental range but 3 hrs traffic per day. Research Zillow rental price to see whether that worth it before you make the move. Also does your title upgrade?
Yeah Id go from SDE2 to SDE3. Not sure if that's a huge difference though. I'd be going from Mid-Level to higher Mid-Level lol
Op - A 1 bhk 700 sft on an average costs $3000 in the area close(20 min commute) to campus. Tc is too low for you to relocate given your other offers.
I'd say go for it, I don't know either company too well, but if it was me and I went through the trouble of interviewing and getting an offer, that probably means I want to get out of where I am and I have some level of interest on the place I interviewed, that sounds like sufficient reason to change, if the pay is better then there's really not much reason to stay.
Defense is going to be very stable over the next few years. But so is Walmart, they do well during recessions. Defense doesn’t pay as well in general though.
143 in VA will get you a lot more quality of life than 180 in the Bay. Sunnyvale is near Mountain View, Cupertino, San Jose. These cities are among the more expensive ones in the bay. I can’t speak on your long term career development but in the short term, you’ll have less purchasing power.
Per levels.fyi, Walmarts senior swe is equivalent to mid swe at Fang. So, if you consider that analogy, I think you're basically at the same level. So, I don't think that makes sense to make a move to the bay per the offered TC. Whats the offered TC breakdown?
What's your base?
145k base + 15k bonus + 20k RSU
with the geopolitics at high pitch, the defense is the place to be. Unless you are a hippy.
