Currently a senior in college getting my bachelors in Cybersecurity, and I have a full time job lined up at IBM as a data center specialist. I want to be able to get a higher job, so should I go for my masters or try and get certs instead?
Don’t get a Masters or go after certs just because. If the field doesn’t excite you, it will burn you out pretty quickly.
Maybe he should go for some entry level certs to find out if it actually interest him. I'm not in the field but that's what I would do.
Certs don’t provide you an answer to this when it relates to security
You don’t need more education or certs since you already have the Bachelors. What you need is experience and proof of work. If you feel like your work experience is insufficient do CTFs and write up the solutions. All my sec Eng interviews asked if I had a GitHub or write ups as part of my initial screening as it gives them a better idea of your overall skill set.
Be wary of cybersecurity masters degrees. More often than not, they’re vocational IT programs to dump veterans into and not engineering-focused. Do a lot of research before signing up.
Security is a broad domain. What are you specifically interested in?
This btw
I’m interested in penetration testing as well as Linux security since I have experience working with Linux servers and different distros. Anything hardware really.
