I work for Spotify in NYC. The work is remote so I live in a MCOL near DC. Why I think I should move: - I’m 26 yo guy who feels very isolating working remotely alone in my apartment - Networking with engineers senior to me would help + generally being in the office on some days - Not many opportunities to make friends where I am - Not many tech networking events so nyc would be great to build my professional network Why I think I shouldn’t move: - I save $5k per month (not including 401k and HSA which is around 1700). Moving to NYC would increase expenses so I might be saving under $3k/month cash. TC: 250k
Move and enjoy yourself but for your sake don’t buy the liberal hype
I swear some ppl have to bring politics into everything.
Move for many reasons you provided but also because NYC will start taxing remote workers with city taxes so you might as well avoid getting double taxed 😂
What’re you saving up for? Do you not like working in tech and want to retire early? Id consider trying it out for a year, if you don’t like it, it’s a reversible decision. You won’t regret about that extra 20k in the end. Go for it!
NYC is an incredible life experience if you can afford it.
This is the time to gain experiences, perspectives and make friendships that last a lifetime! I assume you also want to date and eventually marry! NYC is the way to go for all of this!!
Don’t move! Avoid the rats and taxes!
Consider a move to Jersey City. All the advantages of the city, it’s sooo close, but cheaper rent
Food wise its absolutely terrible, hence for good food you can go to NYC.
I moved 6 months ago from the suburbs around Toronto. Currently at Google. Best decision I’ve ever made. I spend a hell of a lot, but I’ve never been happier. The city is incredible, seeing people walk around, everybody so unique and doing their own thing. Everything is so convenient. Even on the rainiest days, I go out and just watch people scramble around a busy intersection.
Having lived in NYC, I personally strongly prefer DC. Love that the city is not as crazy as New York and you can live a more chill life while at the same time being around smart, ambitious young people.
At your age and in your situation, I say move. Yes, your expenses will go up a bit, but the potential upside is greater for you.
